The Whitewright schools close with a high school diploma ceremony Friday May 18. Col. Alvin Owsley of Dallas will deliver the commencement address. A baccalaureate sermon appeals Sunday at the Methodist Church. Week events include a Monday music recital and a Wednesday seventh grade graduation address by Rev. J R Waldrum.

Whitewright School Spring Festival Crowns May Queen
Tuesday featured a 2 PM baseball game at the athletic park then moved to the high school for athletic contests and a picnic lunch on the lawn. Miss Babe Nell Penn was crowned May Queen with Paul Ryan as King as hundreds attended the coronation and performances by students. Funds from refreshment sales exceed $80 to buy library books and support school programs.

Hickman Given Lease On Life
William Edward Hickman, the man condemned for the Marion Parker slaying, gained at least twenty more days before a ruling on the constitutionality of his death sentence statute. The California Supreme Court delayed again, granting Maj. Walter K. Tuller ten days to file a brief supporting the law and ten more to Hickman’s attorneys to answer. A final decision was not anticipated for about a month.

The Supreme Forest Woodmen Circle of America offers to buy the Lyon farm near Sherman outright for about half a million dollars. Mrs Mary LaRocca president announced work on home construction will start next spring and the project includes building and landscaping on the 214 acre tract.

Grayson County Net Motor Fees Rise In 1928 April
Grayson County received 3170.88 of motor vehicle fees in April while the state collected 3876.59 and total April collections were 6876.59. From Jan 1 to April 28 registrations totaled 455 in April and 10543 for the period with increases over 1927. The county now gets horsepower tax and 30 percent of weight fees under a changed law.

Nine Die As Auto Goes Into Canal
Nine persons from two Hammond families drowned when their car left the Hammond New Orleans highway and plunged into a canal near Rud Dock Louisiana. State police and relatives had searched the route after the group failed to return home. The wreckage and bodies were recovered after investigators traced the tracks from the highway to the canal.

Noah Shel born Gore, 9, died in a Wichita Falls hospital from injuries after a bat slipped from a batter and struck him behind the ear during a May 1 baseball game on a vacant lot. A blood clot formed on his brain and meningitis followed.

An accident south of McKinney left one dead and one injured. Mangrum Bros. truck liability, covered by 8S. H. Montgomery & Son, had claims totaling 6750 settled by the insurer out of court. Relatives received 3500 for the deceased, 3000 for injuries, and 250 for auto damage.

Rev James Reynolds Dies at 80 in Bells Area
Rev James Reynolds died at his home north of Bells Tuesday at 3 pm. Funeral and burial were at Fairview Cemetery north of Savoy, with Rev J T Purvis and Rev J A Henderson officiating. He was born in Tennessee in 1848 and lived north of Bells since 1902. Survived by wife, thirteen children, thirty four grandchildren, five great grandchildren, two brothers, and one sister. Mrs J A Pumphrey of Whitewright and Royce Lay are among his descendants.

Niler Lewis Dies in Florida at 47
Niler Lewis, aged 47 and raised in Whitewright, died in Jacksonville Florida after illness. He owned the first picture show in Whitewright and lived in Wolfe City Houston before moving to Florida. Survived by wife, one son, father D R Lewis and sisters Mrs Lucian LaRoe and Mrs John Haden.
