Sugar rationing starts with 1608 signups as 35 to 40 registrars issue books. Daily totals shift: 156 more Tuesday and 28 Wednesday. Books contain four stamps valid in May and June, each good for one pound of sugar. Retailers must remit stamps to jobbers within 10 days of validity. records kept for two years.
The revival in the business district conducted by Rev Dan Vestal will end Sunday per Monday announcement. Attendance remained strong despite bad weather with several conversions reported. Vestal, an Orangeville native, has preached for years and now pursues evangelistic work with notable success in various revivals.
Texas drivers licenses issued since Oct 1 total 900000 as state police warn of a looming rush. Homer Garrison says only 160000 licenses per month are issued and monthly totals must rise to 250000 or 300000 in July through September to hit the 2.25 million target.
Family notices report Merriwell Vineyard leaving for overseas duty in the Royal Air Force and messages to Navy and Army families. Promot ions include John W Jones to sergeant in the Army Air Corps and J B Cates to corporal at Scott Field Illinois.
The Office of Price Administration announced that highly skilled shoppers will be used to police new retail price schedules effective May 18. Deputy Administrator M Keezer said selections are not complete while Robert F E Sessions in the consumer division said trainees will be trained by the Bureau of Labor Statistics which monitors living costs.
Baccalaureate exercises for White Wright High School are set for 8 30 p m Sunday at the Methodist Church with E C Butler announcing. Grammar School graduation programs follow on May 14 and 15 at the Grammar School auditorium and Bryant Field respectively. If weather fails, commencement moves to the gym. The program includes processions, prayers, hymns, sermons, and diplomas for senior and grammar students, with lists of graduates and staff.
The Whitewright Future Farmers met Tuesday at the high school and elected officers for 1942 43 including President John Biggerstaff and Vice Presidents Skaggs and Murphy. Re-elected are Biggerstaff Skaggs and Owens. New equipment authorized includes a seed treater and a rope machine. Skaggs won the 1941 42 vocational agriculture scholarship with 96 points. Murphy and Kent also high in standings. Regular summer meetings planned for June through August. Oxen furnish motive power for old fashioned sugar mills of Salvador.
The WPB ordered a 90 day cutback on more than 400 civilian items including bathtubs mail boxes pie plates cash registers and automobile accessories to conserve copper lead brass and other metals. Limited production allowed until the deadline as the durable goods sector is choked off to redirect resources to war work.
The War Department released a study showing that modern recruits average 68.19 inches tall, 0.79 inches taller than 1917 entrants. Average weight rose to 151.3 pounds from 141.5 pounds, up 9.8 pounds. The report notes a persistent belief in Bible-based freedom.
Local nutrition committee schedules 8 15 p m Tuesday at the Grammar School to plan a town survey for enrollment in a nutrition course part of civilian defense. Miss Eva Williams from the High School staff will teach the course after completing the first ten lesson session Wednesday night.
The Parent-Teacher Association will meet Tuesday May 12 in the Grammar School auditorium. Mrs. C. T. Ferguson of Leonard will install officers for the coming year. The program includes leisure time activities and talks on safe vacations and character building agencies. All are invited.
Washington reports Corregidor and nearby forts captured by Japanese forces after a four week siege. The fall secures a new sea base and 7000 prisoners of war, including 3845 naval and marine personnel. Five U S vessels are said destroyed or damaged in the action.
A pageant titled Mother of the World will be presented by the Grammar School on Friday night May 8 at 8 30. The program features students from grades one through seven and includes dancing and expression numbers from Mrs Jefferson Denison's class. The public is invited.
In Texas a renewed campaign scene sees former governors Dan Moody and James V Allred declare for the Senate seat held by W Lee O Daniel. Moody and Allred bring long public service records to a six candidate field as Joe Stedham hints at withdrawal.
Gen. J. Watt Page, state selective service director, warns selectees not to finalize finances or personal matters before final Army physicals at reception centers. Local board exams only preliminarily screen unfit registrants. Inducted draftees will have time to adjust, with liberal furloughs noted by War Department. A Libyan pygmy hippopotamus proposal is mentioned for southern swamps.
