Food Prices Fall 20 Percent From Year Ago
CHICAGO. A survey shows wholesale and retail food prices are about 20 percent lower than a year ago. Meat and grains lead the decline with declines from 4 to 11 percent in retail meat, grains 35 to 55 percent, butter 16 percent, eggs 10 percent, cheese 13 percent, potatoes about 50 percent, lard 31 percent, fruits 5 to 50 percent, vegetables 5 to 33 percent. Practically every food item on markets is cheaper than a year earlier.
