George M. Hight will assume management of the Linda theatre on April 1 after purchasing it from Frank Gillespie this week. This marks Hight’s second ownership. past owners include Marshall Hasty, Mr. Frakes, Carl Moses, and now Gillespie. The Gillespies will stay in Whitewright until school ends in May.
The Grayson County Hunters Association will hold its spring meeting April 5 to 7 at Rock Creek Camp, 15 miles north of Whitesboro. Grady McCorstin of Whitewright announces a basket lunch at 7 p.m. Tuesday followed by horn-blowing, wolf calling, and fox and wolf dog bench shows judged by Dean Young of Dallas.
Texas growers from Lavaca to Cherokee counties formed the Old Cotton Belt Association of Texas to protest government allotment cuts. Law son Rivers of Elgin was named president as about 5 000 farmers from Lavaca to Houston and Cherokee counties met in defense of east Texas cotton acreage against West Texas gains.

Bethel led by Rev Fred Thomas of Trenton, with 730 p m weekday services and Sunday worship. Enterprise led by Rev Thomas Beall of Sherman with singing by Rev L D Beall and Mrs Beall at 8 p m weekdays. Public invited.
The menu lists daily meals from Monday to Thursday with main dishes and sides. Monday features Irish Stew and desserts. Tuesday offers Chicken Fried Steak with mashed potatoes. Wednesday serves Red Beans and Ham Hock with sandwiches. Thursday presents Hamburgers with Park-n-Beans and peach.
Congress approved a $745 million military pay raise bill boosting average pay by 6.7 percent for about 2,000,000 personnel. The Senate passed it by voice vote, the House quickly accepted two Senate amendments, and the measure went to the White House amid warnings of manpower leave for civilian life.
In Flint Michigan nurse Kay Kelley 22 won the Michigan pipe puffing contest with a 36 minute 10 second elapsed time beating Mrs Robert Rudl the international champion. Floyd Bevins 60 of Flint won the overall smoker prize with a 1 hour 30 minute 15 second effort.
New York reports newspaper advertising in 52 cities totaled 194,394,576 lines in February, up 7 percent from 180,731,702 lines in February 1954. First two months of the year show 390,663,901 lines, a 7.4 percent rise, with automotive ads up 19.5 percent in February and financial ads up 10.7 percent for the two months.
Whitewright led 2 0 after the first inning and added five more in a 7 1 victory over Van Alstyne. Pannell led off with a single and stole second. Hayes drove in two runs with a two run single in the third and a later three run rally capped by Clem’s triple. Moore’s potential grand slam was ruled foul. Next game set for 2:00 at American Legion Ball Park.
Eighteen boys competed in the 4 H Club rifle match. David Blackerby and Joe Chat Beazley took first and second, earning spots to represent Whitewright in the county meet on April 16 at Sherman. Alternates were Wilbert and Jerry Bennett.
Agriculture Commissioner White estimates losses run into millions from a weekend freeze. Peach and cottonseed damage totals reach several million, with coastal Bend and East Texas hardest hit. Rice spared slightly, while much fruit and sprouting crops from San Antonio to Lubbock are ruined.
Special pre Easter services will be held in the Methodist Church on Wednesday April 6 and Friday April 8 at 730 pm. Maundy Thursday communion will take place in the Presbyterian Church on April 7 at 730 pm. The public is invited to attend as part of Easter preparation. The First Methodist Church choir will present an Easter program of music and scripture on Easter Sunday at 5:00 pm.
The Baptist Sunday School aims for 301 attendees next Sunday as part of a nationwide revival drive led by Newton V. Cole. The revival began last Sunday and runs through next, with Chaplain Major Wilbur J. McDaniel at Reese Air Force Base as evangelist. Services are 10 am and 7:30 pm daily, with Sunday hours unchanged. Training Union targets 101 attendees at 6:30 pm.
Ex Texas House Speakers join Austin lobby ranks as the so called Third House. Former leaders Claude Gilmer Emmett Morse Homer Leonard W O Reed and Reuben Senterfitt are among registered lobbyists shaping bills with influence in state politics. Durwood Manford is noted as a standout for opportunistic lobbying. The Austin lobby scene rivals Washington in size and reach.
In Greenville South Carolina a man billed as the fattest in the world named Blimp Levy weighing 763 pounds survived a police investigation. He was on Main Street for American Legion benefit while A B Satterfield questioned by officers deemed him genuine flesh and blood.
Voters face two local school trustee elections this week with two candidates for the district post Thomas Sears and Wilson Kaiser and Marshall Hasty as the lone county trustee-at-large candidate urging high turnout. A separate city election on Tuesday April 5 will determine two city commission seats with incumbents Jack Meador and Charlie Ayres the only names on the ballot.
The Grayson County Crippled Children Society leads an Easter Seal drive hoping to raise 5000 with Whitewright contributions totaling about 130 so far. Local chairman Lee Smith notes county expectations, urges two weeks more of donations, and emphasizes that funds stay in the county. Also announced is an open house at the Child Development School in Sherman this Sunday for families seeking developmental support.
Capt Edgar C Bundy president of the Abraham Lincoln National Republican Club in Chicago announced a nationwide drive to wrest control of the Republican Party from New Dealers and internationalists. Bundy said this marks the first major break between Eisenhower liberals and the conservative isolationist wing. He said the club will be aided by Senator McCarthy of Wisconsin Governor Lee of Utah Senator Malone of Nevada and former Representative Clardy of Michigan.
Texas final 1954 traffic toll shows 2,431 deaths, up 63 from 1953. Pedestrian fatalities fell nine percent while two car collisions rose nine percent. The Texas Department of Public Safety and state police report 179 deaths in February, lifting the 1955 toll to 368, compared with 359 at this time last year.
