The new law sets earnings limits for Social Security in 1962. A person earning 1200 dollars or less receives full benefits. earnings above 1200 reduce family benefits by 1 for every 2 dollars up to 1700 and by 1 for each dollar above 1700. It notes possible small benefits for families with multiple dependents and urges workers over 65 to apply to determine eligibility and future retirement benefit timing. A Riverhead New York couple feigned the husband’s death to claim veterans and relief benefits. The wife collected forty thousand dollars and produced four more children with the supposed corpse. The ruse unraveled when the husband applied for county welfare as well. They were both arrested.
U S Attorney Barefoot Sanders said a special grand jury will convene in Dallas next week to investigate income tax evasion and failures to file tax returns in the Northern District of Texas. He noted this may be the first such grand jury dedicated to tax matters in the district. The session, ordered by Judge Joe E Estres, targets violations with penalties up to five years in prison and $10000 fines for evasion and up to one year and $10000 for failure to file. Sanders cited nationwide totals of 2500 years in prison and $2.5 million in fines last year.
Pfc Bernis Owens 23, active in meetings where Army Reservists pressed for discharge from active duty, was given six months hard labor in the Ft. Polk stockade by a special court martial panel of five officers. The court, led by Maj Thomas N Fuller, also fined Owens 50 dollars a month for six months from his 124 dollar monthly pay. The 1906 Cubs reportedly won 116 games and were cited as top in major league history.

Clint Hennig urges all parents especially fathers to attend as he has led the activity for years. Joe Crouch of Whitewright was elected commissioner at last Thursday's Grayson Fannin League representatives meeting, replacing Hennig.

A Georgia taxpayer filed suit two hours after the decision, urging Georgia’s county unit system be struck down. The case centers on Tennessee where no reapportionment in 61 years and could affect many states.
The First Sunday Singing Convention will be held at 2 p.m. in the Assembly of God Church. A group of Indian singers from Durant, Oklahoma will perform. Frank Humphries leads the event and the public is invited.

Washington reports the United States conducted another underground nuclear detonation at the Nevada testing site. It is the 23rd announced test since testing resumed. The Atomic Energy Commission said the detonation was low yield, under 20 000 tons of TNT.
