Bonham March 17 The district court convicted Will Hicks of murder in the Parragin case. Parragin, a married father of six, was shot twice in a Savoy barn after a quarrel tied to family issues. The jury, drawn from eighty men, awarded Hicks a twenty year penitentiary sentence.
New Orleans March 20 Senator Joseph Weldon Bailey of Texas declares at the Southern Pine Association convention that a Republican Harding renomination and Democratic Underwood nomination would relieve U S business from new taxes. He laments high taxation and urges business pressure on government.
The East Circle Baptist ladies will sell pies cakes dressed chickens candies and more at the Lloyd Moore Furniture store next Saturday afternoon. Proceeds support church activities and Sunday dinner needs.
Henry B. Everheart pioneer citizen of this section died at his home in the Kentuckytown community Wednesday noon after a long illness. Born May 8, 1855 in Tennessee, he moved to Texas in 1856 with his parents. He married Julia Johnson in 1882 and had nine children, all surviving except one infant. Funeral at Canaan church Thursday at 2 pm conducted by Rev. D. F. Fuller. Interment Everheart Memorial Cemetery in Canaan. Survived by wife and eight children, plus a sister.
Whitewright High defeated Celina by 3 votes to 0 in a Friday night debate. Addison Vestal won best individual debater. he received a gold medal from Whitewright business leaders for the top performance. The topic argued was a state constitutional amendment to levy a 3 mill tax for higher education without extra legislative funds.
Whitewright hosts its annual Pure Food Show under PTA auspices on April 19 20 and 21. Local merchants will display goods with many out-of-town booths and a country store featuring products from major manufacturers. Miss Gladys Ray leads an entertainment program for both afternoons and evenings.

Austin reports a greatly reduced Texas peach harvest after a freeze. Elberta buds show 75 to 100 percent damage with many sections expecting at most a half crop. A test of 180 buds found 105 killed, 20 doubtful, with remaining unhurt but possibly damaged.
Miners at a Walier Coal Company mine in DuQuoin march 19 began daily morning prayer services at the shaft bottom before entering workrooms. Officials say the short services, led with miners’ heads uncovered, are unprecedented in U S coal mines.
A cold front packed a brutal north wind from Sunday to Monday, killing young vegetation and threatening the oat crop while insects likely perished in the freeze. Temperatures ranged around 14 degrees, marking the coldest March spell in years with roots of weather and misread thermometers.
The Chamber of Commerce receipted for a liberal shipment of government flower seed sent with the compliments of Congressman Sam Rayburn. The shipment, consisting of several hundred small packages, was turned over to Miss Susie Noe for distribution.

In Waco on March 20 the jury returned a second death verdict against Roy Mitchell, a Black man, for the murder of Mrs. Ethel Denecamp. The three minute and forty second deliberation followed his refusal to testify. No new trial motions were filed, and the scene prompted cheers despite court warnings.
Dallas reports Fort Worth was selected as the site for the 1924 encampment of the Texas grand lodge of the Independent Order of Odd Fellows at today’s meeting.

The Easter Evangel by Lorenz will be performed next Wednesday evening at the Presbyterian Church. About thirty top city singers have prepared two weeks of rehearsals for this cantata presented by the Teacher Association. The program features two parts Christ’s Sufferings and Resurrection with a series of choruses, solos, and readings, led by Rev. J. A. Dickey and accompanied by pianist Mrs. J. D. Harp.
The Chamber of Commerce arranged radio programs in rural schoolhouses near Whitewright. Joe Johnson will provide and operate the equipment. Programs will occur next week weather permitting with times and locations announced the afternoon before each evening event.
Whitewright school pupils prepared for the Sherman County Interscholastic meet this Saturday. They express confidence in winning several honors and have been practicing diligently. A number of parents and patrons will attend the event.
The Cotton Belt implements a new timetable starting last Sunday. It lists westbound trains arriving slightly later and eastbound trains slightly earlier. The schedule shows specific train numbers and times such as 4:31 p.m. and 6:20 p.m. and notes minor adjustments in arrival times.
Tulsa reports two men killed in a clash over drilling at Prairie View Churchyard in Tonkawa oil field. A teamster unloading materials was struck with a crowbar by a guard. the guard was then fatally shot by another teamster with a shotgun. The dispute centers on drilling within half an acre of the churchyard while leaving the adjacent cemetery undisturbed.
O G Paschal a 20 year old of 814 Martinique street was beaten by six men on the West Dallas Pike near Cement City around 1130 Monday night. He says it was a case of mistaken identity and after they learned the error they released him and apologized. He received two stitches for his upper lip and one for a forehead at the emergency hospital.
Sherman March 20. J A Mc Campbell Assistant County Auditor departed for Austin to file the new 434 per cent county road refunding bonds with the State Comptroller. County Judge R M Carter and County Clerk C M Cole completed signatures on the bonds. The issue replaces the old 5 per cent bonds to save about 25000 in interest on roughly 750000 remaining unpaid. Bonds sold to the National Bank of Commerce St Louis via Walter Phillips formerly of Sherman.
