The city adopts a metered, cost saving street lighting contract with Texas Louisiana Power Co. A switch at the plant will allow energy conservation and uniform service. Residents may opt to dim residential lights on bright moonlit nights and merchants can sponsor awning lights at a nominal rate to dispel darkness.
The beach near Wiltze saw a record Gulf turtle landed on Saturday by A. The giant creature weighed about 1,350 pounds with a 6 foot shell width and age around 300 years. Four horses aided the haul, marking a remarkable catch for the coast guard and locals.
Southeast Grayson County hosts a three day singing convention at Canaan church starting Saturday night March 30 and continuing through Sunday. Pastors urged to promote the event as a shared church and Sunday school effort with every song leader and organist a delegate having a vote. The Easter date invites an Easter service and visiting singers will be cared for while locals bring lunches to spend the day.
Robert Lee Cantrell 18 son of Mr and Mrs F P Cantrell of Mahurin northeast of town died in Sherman hospital last Thursday at 11 after an appendicitis operation. He was born near McGregor in 1911 and moved to Whitewright 14 years ago. He joined the Christian Church three years ago. Funeral was Sunday at home with Elder W N Carter conducting burial at Oak Hill Cemetery. Pallbearers and honor guards included classmates and local residents. He is survived by his parents and siblings Mrs A E Mulligan Trenton Miss Lizzie Cantrell Henry and Julius Cantrell among others.
In Budapest five years ago Josef Bako exhumed a brother’s body, dressed it in his clothes, and set a house on fire to fake his death and marry his sweetheart. The wife collected insurance and remarried, but he was later recognized and arrested after confessing a bigamy and vandalism hoax.
A. A. Tucker known as Uncle Aaron prepared his own grave in Bethel Cemetery east of Mabank. Funeral services were held for the Mabank area pioneer who planned the burial by bricking the grave and leaning the coffin about 30 degrees to keep it straight.
Mr. and Mrs. J. W. Pender of Greenville and Mrs. R. P. Gordon of Sherman were guests of Mrs. G. W. Pope on Tuesday for a social visit.
The Friday Literary Club accepted a Civic Committee suggestion to sponsor a yard beautification campaign and pledged cooperation with a Whitewright pavement movement. They also approved a circulating library, and planned a Verdi program led by Mrs. A. A. Adams with readings and a duet by Miss Gladys Ray and Mrs. Hamilton. The next meeting is March 29 at Mrs. Hooper’s home.
Prof C Leonard Woolley reports an eight foot silt and clay layer from Euphrates flood deposits in Mesopotamia. He notes this evidence may align with Sumerian and Genesis flood legends but cautions it does not prove a universal flood.
Mrs H T Atterberry hosted a 42 party Thursday afternoon at her father D S Mcmillin home honoring house guest Mrs Mary Hestand of Slaton. Jonquil and fern decor, games starting at 3 o clock, green and yellow crepe table decor and cake for twenty eight. Mrs Fk E Douglas made high score with assistance from Miss Inez Ray.
Mr and Mrs George Blair of Sherman visited relatives in Whitewright Sunday, sharing time with family during a weekend trip.
Fort Worth report notes seven TCU faculty members ranked the Bible as the first book a cultured person should read. The lists include Shakespeare and Milton among others, with varied additions such as The Outline of History and Paradise Lost. Culture is described as the growth of the spirit, not mere book knowledge.
Arthur Sears died suddenly at his Abilene home at about age 57. He was raised in Whitewright, son of the late Frank Sears, a prominent Abilene ranchman. He is survived by his mother, wife, and several children. Relatives and friends here were shocked by the news.
The Whitewright City Commission orders an April 23 election to decide if residents favor funding street paving in the business district. If approved, the charter will be amended to apply revised Texas paving statutes and create a paving district. Strong support noted after harsh weather and mud across crossings.
The Epworth League will lead the Sunday evening service at the Methodist Church. The program includes devotional, congregational singing, special songs and readings by Leaguers. All are invited to attend for an evening of edification. Sunday March 24 at 7 30 p m H M Cowling pastor.

Hopper of Howe, Ralph Judd of Commerce, Miss Alma Jo Dixon, and Miss Opal Cates. Past weekend trips to Sherman Tom Bean Dallas Farmington and Westminster are listed plus a B Y P U social at the Lovell home. A funeral for Little Miss Louise Carnell is noted with Rev J A Henderson.
W. L. Echols city marshal of Van Alstyne was seriously wounded about 2 15 am when a hijacker stepped from a dark alley and ordered him to surrender. Three men in a high powered car fled after the shooting leaving tools and a sledgehammer behind. Echols, a 37 year veteran, was taken to Wilson N Jones Hospital in Sherman for surgery. His brother is Whitewright mayor F M Echols who rushed to the hospital after learning of the attack.
Two Dallas youths, about 16, paid fines of 48.20 each in Dallas court on false imprisonment charges. They allegedly abducted Gentry T. Jones and Jack Hoyle to a creek bottom near Dallas where one was whipped with a belt. The kidnaping count was dismissed after parents urged leniency. Hoyle is the son of Dr. and Mrs. R C Hoyle. Youths said they were trying to have fun.
W. E. LaRoe led a Rotary Club luncheon program featuring guests Rol lin Rolfe of Sherman and Miss Mary Lee Andrews with Joann Everheart. Rolfe delivered an engaging talk on architecture while Andrews and Everheart provided songs and music. The event was praised as one of the club’s best in some time.
Farmers report stock illness after limited exercise with livestock standing in lots for hours. A Deport Times reader cites eight mules with two bedders started. by noon four mules exhausted and others refuse feed after work.
George Ball hosts Saturday night activities while the Pilot Grove intermediate and Junior B Y P U plan a program at Westminster Sunday night. The Rev Knight filled his regular appointment here. Lizzie Barnes visited Van Alstyne Monday, and George Miller of Sherman spent the weekend with relatives. Mary Scoggins was in Sherman on business, Dee St John visited homefolks, and Lillie Maxwell of Sedalia visited Jane Lovell with the Gardlands hosting visitors Friday.
