Luncheon Honors Whitewright Education Leaders at High School

Members of the Whitewright board of education and their spouses, along with Superintendent Fred W. Smith, attended a noon luncheon hosted by the third year home economics class at Whitewright High School. Miss Mac Reed directs the department, praised by State inspectors, as students served a formal menu and received high commendations for their work.

Dale Trial Postponed Fifth Time In 1927 Bribery Case

In Austin the trial of F A Dale of Bonham for allegedly taking a $1000 bribe as a Fortieth Legislature member was postponed for the fifth time. The case was reset to April 16 due to defense counsel illness and a claimed material witness for the defense, Representative W R Poage of McLennan County.

Burglars Steal Theatre Safe in McKinney Break-in

Burglars entered the R. and R. Theatre in McKinney Sunday night and carried off the safe containing over $700 along with valuable papers. Entry was made through the balcony by cutting a hole in the door and turning the knob. Police report no crew identified yet.

Whitewright Tigers Swing Opening Win Over Tom Bean

The Whitewright High School baseball team defeated Tom Bean 3 to 2 on Friday. Ryan pitched for Whitewright with Holloway on the mound for Tom Bean, Holloway fanning ten and Ryan six. Ruth had two singles for Whitewright, with Mayo driving in a run on a sacrifice, and Ruth stealing two bases. Tom Bean scored two runs in the seventh on two hits and two errors. Whitewright answered with two in the same inning on four errors.

Boy Scout Hut Under Construction in Whitewright

Carpenters began constructing a new 18 by 24 foot Boy Scout hut on lots north of the ice house in Whitewright. The site features shade trees and an entrance porch with six windows and a large fireplace. Ford Moore of Sherman donated 250 dollars in memory of his father, late Mayor T B Moore. Scoutmaster Rev J H Hawkins leads a growing Whitewright Troop.

Mrs N A Wilson a native of Texas died at her son in law D W Garrett home two weeks illness died Tuesday morning one and one half miles south of Tom Bean Born near Ken tuckytown April 5 1850 wife of the late T J Wilson who died in 1898 Survived by three children Henry Wilson Mrs D W Garrett of Tom Bean and Mrs Kate Ray of Altus Okla Also survived by several grandchildren Funeral held at the Baptist Church Tom Bean Wednesday at 2 30 conducted by Rev I E Teague Rev C Chumbley and Rev Howard McSpedden Burial at Warden Cemetery two miles south of Tom Bean

Rotary Conference Set for Corsicana April 16 17

Corsicana hosts the 48th District Rotary International Conference April 16 17 with Ray Knoeppel of New York City as keynote speaker. H W Stillwell of Texarkana District Governor and John C Calhoun chair coordinate plans expected to bring at least a thousand Rotarians. Corsicana clubs prepare entertainment for visitors including teas receptions and a banquet for delegates wives.

Self Help Club Meets At Mrs Holcomb Home

The Self Help Club met at Mrs W B Holcomb's home with Mrs Carl Holland presiding. Miss Derryberry demonstrated Italian hemstitching for children's clothes and matching corners. All members attended along with six visitors. A repast followed. Mrs Holland to entertain March 24.

Death Claims Splendid Woman Mrs Helen Irene Montgomery

The death of Mrs Helen Irene Montgomery wife of Ben S Montgomery occurred Wednesday morning at 8 20 at the family home in Whitewright after eight months illness. Born Helen Rathbun in 1862 she lived in Whitewright 44 years and was active in the Presbyterian Church. Survived by husband and ten children, two brothers and two sisters. Funeral was at 10 this morning at the Presbyterian Church with Rev J W Willbanks and Rev J F Fender officiating. Interment in Oak Hill Cemetery.

Denison Bridge Toll Hearing Delayed to April

The hearing on toll reductions for the Red River Bridge Company at the Denison Colbert bridges, ordered by the secretary of war, is postponed to the second week of April. Lieut Col J L Schley will preside. Railway Commission and attorney general's office will attend. former Senator Joseph W Bailey represents bridge owners.

Rain in Whitewright Boosts Early Planting Prospects

A light morning rain visited Whitewright improving prospects for crops. Farmers had nearly finished planting corn when the rain fell. Early planted corn is sprouting and grain crops look fine with strong fruit blossom promising a large crop barring late freezes.

Building curb on West Grand avenue by Dr R May

Dr R May plans a concrete curb in front of his house on West Grand avenue. The curb line sits 18 feet from the property line leaving space for lawn flowers and trees. The move could encourage neighbors to follow and curb on both sides would greatly improve the street's appearance.

Paroled Man Contray So Freedom Is Revoked

A parole granted to James Anderson on January 15, 1927 was revoked by Governor Dan Moody. H S Granberry of Douglasville said Anderson became so disagreeable that he would not do his work. Anderson was convicted of murder in Dallas County and sentenced to five to ninety nine years.

Rotary Club Announces Home Prize and Beautification Efforts

At a Friday luncheon the Rotary Club voted to award a prize in the Beau tiful Home Contest sponsored by the Friday Literary Club. A resolution backed the Parent-Teacher Association in beautifying Whitewright High School, with costs estimated in the hundreds of dollars to be raised by the town. The meeting became a round-table on topics including Boy Scouts and home beautification.

Man Killed When Auto Hits Truck Near Plano

John Smith nightwatchman at Allen died when his car collided with Mangrum Bros. truck driven by D K Boswell four miles north of Plano. Dr M O Perry of Allen was critically injured with a broken leg three broken ribs and facial injuries. Boswell suffered minor back injuries. Emory Christian and Johnnie Johnson survived. Perry did not blame the truck driver.

Oil Showing In Dallas County

Carrollton reports a good oil and gas showing on the W. W. McCoy farm one mile north of town drilled by the Alford Oil Company of Dallas. The Glenmore sand was struck at 1 363 feet and the drill was sunk to 1 421 feet before a guard station was placed. A 58 inch casing will be set with cement and drilling to resume.

Raising Fund To Entertain Legion

SAN ANTONIO Governor Moody endorsed the revived San Antonio campaign to raise 100000 to entertain the American Legion convention next October. Mayor C M Chambers announced a businessmen luncheon ending with about 40000 pledged. Porter Whaley Chamber manager said no outside subscriptions will be asked.

Hughston Seeks Congress Seat

McKinney attorney Hughston announced his candidacy for Congress to represent the Fourth District. Born in Plano and raised in Collin County, he pledged to support farm relief legislation and to work with friends of strict enforcement of the eighteenth amendment.

Fort Worth Glee Club and Orchestra Concert Planned

The Texas Woman's College orchestra and glee club of Fort Worth, directed by Carl Venth and Ellen Jane Lindsay, perform at the high school auditorium on Tuesday afternoon March 20 from 5 to 4 o'clock. Thirty two glee club members and sixteen orchestra members participate under PTA auspices. Admission fees fund campus beautification as the group travels to Bonham and McKinney for subsequent performances.

Fleming Livery Stable Sells On Main Street

The Fleming Livery Stable on lower Main Street changes hands from J. R. Fleming to J. R. Ladd of Sherman after years of operation. The 60 by 142 foot building has shifted from livery use to mule barn as automobiles rendered the business obsolete.

A Sherman and Whitewright tour party studying dairy farming in Mississippi travels by automobile for a ten to twelve day inspection. 287 Bodies Found Following Flood Tragedy at St Francis Dam

Mrs. H G Webster entertained at West Spruce street with a bridge party for sixteen guests in honor of Miss Nell Montgomery. The event celebrated her forthcoming marriage to Mr Robert L Giles set for 4 30 this afternoon at the Montgomery home. A green and white theme decorated the event and gifts were presented to the honoree.
