A degree team from the McKinney Masonic Lodge will confer the third degree for the Whitewright Lodge Monday night. B W Newman master of the lodge urges all Masons to attend. Officers for the new Masonic year will be installed with a Dallas lodge member officiating. Refreshments will be served.
Middleton Rhode Island December 1921 Francis Ormand French, once wealthy and connected to John Jacob Astor II, awaits word on relief assistance after bankruptcy and selling writings. He plans to work if needed and seeks either Works Progress Administration or state relief while unemployed. He says he has refused family aid before and hopes to settle his bankruptcy obligations.
Washington reports 739 Texas postmasters receive lifetime tenure under a late session act. First class postmasters are appointed by the President and now hold indefinite terms, replacing the previous four-year limits. In Texas 41 first-class offices are included, with incumbents granted life-time posts.
Edmund M. Fry Jr. leaves the University of Oklahoma with engineering exams and Army and Marine Corps job offers. The War Department appointed him a Second Lieutenant in the Army Engineering corps and assigned him to an engineering post in the Marine corps. His year of Army service was accepted, while he had already secured a civil engineering job.
Denison booster leaders, in chamber meetings, set Rayburn Day events for July 11 with a 4 p.m. parade directed by A. C. Wimpee and a 7 p.m. banquet at Hotel Denison for 300 reservations with Ben Munson as toastmaster. Rayburn to speak briefly. Mayor Clarence Scott to introduce him outdoors at Forest Park at 8:30 p.m.
Secretary Roper told a Washington convention of the International Association of Display Men that an upward swing is forming and government actions remove obstacles to private initiative. He cited improved wholesale and retail inventories from a wave of merchandising efforts aimed at boosting buying consciousness.
Fred E. Horton, 63, longtime Greenville farm boy turned civil and business leader, died at home after months of illness. A prominent Democratic figure and publisher of the Evening Banner, he wrote from his sick bed, having served as printer's devil, co-owner, and publisher for over four decades. Horton also served as Greenville postmaster, appointed acting in 1933 and confirmed a year later by the Senate.
Washington reports that American farmers start the 1938 marketing season with cash income projected at about 7.55 billion dollars, roughly 25 percent below the farm law goal of 10 billion. Government payments and price trends push forecasts for the year. six month income may total around 3.05 billion, with the full year not likely exceeding 7.55 billion unless demand and prices rise substantially.
Chapel Hill N C a UNC chemist Dr Frank K Cameron outlines a system to grow cotton densely harvest the stalk and process the whole plant to extract cellulose for rayon plastic and other products including auto door handles and high grade paper He says farmers could net 10 to 15 an acre vs under 10 with traditional methods and envisions cooperative ownership of a 1500 dollar cotton harvester built to cut and bale the crop for cellulose processing.
Representative Bertrand H. Snell, Republican House leader and Roosevelt critic, announces retirement after 24 years in Congress to focus on business in Upper New York State. He cites heavy public duties and family health as factors. Speculation on his successor centers on Martin of Massachusetts, Mapes of Michigan, Fish of New York, and Tabor of New York.
Whitewright high school girls Evelyn Hill Mary Dale King Sara Atterberry and Dorothy Jo Akridge attended the first state conference for Future Homemakers at Texas State College for Women in Denton. The three day event focused on planning programs for Texas 250 Future Homemaker organizations with Miss Clara Tucker in charge and Mrs Lela Tomlinson leading discussions.
County Agent W. O. Teddlie said Tuesday that demand for Government poison is declining and the grasshopper infestation in Grayson County has diminished. Enough poison is on hand to meet farmers needs unless the situation worsens. Farmers control efforts started two weeks ago have been effective and crops are in excellent condition as hopper migration has been stopped.
Agriculture Department experts launch a summer program of free cotton classing and market news services to help U.S. growers regain world market share. Farmers must form groups pledging to grow a single best variety for their area to avoid cross pollination. Congress funded the effort at 2.25 million dollars for the fiscal year starting July 1. Applications for community organizations go to field offices in Atlanta, Memphis, Dallas, Austin and El Paso, with about five more opened within 60 days, sites to be chosen based on farmer interest.
In Beaver Crossing Nebraska five year old Joan Rice used gasoline in a toy stove to cook for her dolls without parental knowledge. She lit a match and the stove exploded causing her death.
In Pittsburgh a bronze tamper-proof banjo funded by national contributions will replace the stolen instrument at the Stephens Collins Foster Memorial. The banjo will be riveted to Old Black Joe on July 4 during the 112th anniversary of Foster's birth.
Funeral services were held for Edna M. Rathbun, 79, at the Presbyterian Church with Dr. B Wrenn Webb and Dr. J F Fender officiating. Interment followed at Oak Hill Cemetery. Survived by sister Mrs R R McCoy of Idaho and a niece and two cousins. Rathbun authored a personal life history and taught at the church for 41 years. She requested no flowers, noting generous deeds and the 23rd Psalm.
Sunday visitors and homecomings fill Orangeville notes. Families including Dewoody Bangs Norris and Jones rejoin relatives in Whitewright Hillsboro Wichita and Ely sports mention Orangeville baseball’s 6 to 4 defeat at Ely. Local households welcome back Ima Jean Jones and Arvie Jones plus Barbara Richey and Barbara Morris with kin.
In Dequeen Arkansas four baby girls were born last night to Mrs. H. T. Valentine, a 27 year old orchard worker's wife. Dr. G L Kimball said the quadruplets weighed about two and a half pounds each and appeared healthy.
The American Legion picnic will run five days from July 12 to July 16 with The Parade of Shows, the largest carnival company to play the event in years. It features Green River Negro Minstrel and other rides and shows. Political speakers may appear, but gubernatorial candidates are focusing on other towns due to the July 23 primary.
Absentee voting opens July 3 and runs through July 19 for the July 23 primary. Voters present in the county during this period may vote in person at the county clerk's office if away on election day. Those out of the county will receive ballots by mail upon request.
President Roosevelt signed the wage hour bill creating federal rules for interstate industry. The act sets a 25 cent minimum wage and 44 hour week, with further increases to 30 cents next year. Provisions take effect at once in part and fully 120 days after signature.
Mrs. H. A. McDougal was rushed to Allen Memorial hospital after a Bonham crash Monday afternoon. Two boys in an early model car rear ended the McDougals’ vehicle and fled. The impact shattered her glasses and drove a frame fragment into her eye, necessitating removal. Mr. McDougal is publisher of the Bonham Daily Favorite.
Sloshing in rain the Ringling Brothers Barnum and Bailey troupe packed trains to retire to winter quarters after a 1938 summer tour ended by a strike. 1600 workers refused a 25 percent pay cut. an agreement was later signed to supply labor to move the show to Sarasota, Florida.
