July cotton acreage takes sharp decline

Pump Installed At New City Well
An electrically operated pump has been installed at the new city water well and has run for several days. Water from the well has not yet been added to the reservoirs pending laboratory tests by the city. The 25 horsepower rotary pump lifts water by suction, delivering about 150 gallons per minute versus 70 from the old air pumped unit, and uses about half the horsepower. The 1150 foot deep well had water dumped to the creek during recent operations to clean the casing and pipe.

Texas state police urged better knowledge of right of way rules to cut highway crashes. Analyzing 771 recent wrecks, they found 16 percent involved drivers not in rightful positions. Samuel Alexander Vaughn, 88, a late Confederate veteran in Sherman, died at his home after a long life that included service in Burnt Mills Mississippi in 1864, moving from Tennessee to Texas, and settling near Kentuckytown before relocating to Sherman in 1911. He left a large family including a wife Nannie Belle Mathis and five sons, two daughters, siblings, 19 grandchildren and seven great grandchildren. Second Couple Left Nude By Hold Up Men
In Edwardville Illinois police pursued a new bandit type after a second holdup left victims stripped and embarrassed by the roadside. Raymond Becker age 22 of Chicago and a woman companion were robbed of 40 dollars their car and all clothing save their shoes. Two armed youths had stripped another couple near the same highway two days before after taking cash and a diamond ring. The hijacked cars were later found abandoned near the scenes.
