The Van Alstyne group opposes the bond election while fostering multiple petitions to muddy the good road plan. They favor local roads for their area, resist type B plans elsewhere, and push for another election before the current results are settled. They enjoy a $35,000 per mile concrete road advantage while arguing against broader county improvements.
The P T A will meet next Tuesday at 4 PM at Mrs. Guy Hamilton’s home. Program includes Invocation by Rev J H Hawkins, a quartet with Mrs Hamilton Mrs Barbee Fred W Smith and Rev Hawkins, reading by Billie Magar, piano solo by Mrs G F Bryant, and a round table discussion on Recreation led by Mrs Fred W Smith.
Sherman plans for an intensified county wide campaign to urge support for the good roads proposition. Judge G P Webb was chosen as chairman of the county committee with other members from various sections named to help inform voters.
In a Tuesday election eighty two votes were cast with a 13 to 1 result approving a 10 cent tax for two years to fund repairs for the grammar and high school buildings. Proceeds will fix the grammar school and complete minor repairs at the high school before the new term.
Farmers rush with early thresher and hay balers. Cotton fields shaped by cultivators and hoes. Local social and church activity highlighted with travel, visits, and weekly gatherings.
The banks post office and most business houses in Whitewright will close Monday July 4. Grocery stores open until 9am with orders placed before then for delivery. Dry goods stores will not open. No Independence Day program planned. many plan to spend the day on Red River or attend the Dallas Shreveport baseball double header.
The North Texas Baptist Encampment will be held at Woodlake between Sherman and Denison from July 5 to 14. Dr. R. M. Inlow of Oklahoma City will deliver the opening address on Tuesday July 5 at 8 p.m. Other prominent men will appear on the program daily. The encampment expects its largest attendance yet.
Rev. J. A. Lovell of Fort Worth will preach at the Kentuckytown church next Sunday morning at 11 o'clock.
Isaac Baskowitz a Dallas bill collector heading to New York to reunite with his sister Gertrude after spotting her photo on an art calendar The tale says Bolsheviks abducted his family in Russia ten years ago and the siblings then lost contact Baskowitz age 24 and Gertrude 18 located through the calendar and lithographer correspondence.
Relatives and friends celebrated Aunt Jane Thompson's 89th birthday with a dinner at the Hampton home. The gathering featured reminiscences, a tale of family truth, and gifts while Aunt Jane and her guests praised God and the Bible. Names of attendees include Mrs. E. E. Blount, Mrs. S. J. Thompson, Rev H. M. Cowling, and many others.
Mr and Mrs Joe Slover and their son and Mrs Lillie Slover traveled back to Sulphur Oklahoma after visiting at the home of Mrs W T Ross.
In a letter to the Denison Herald Hon. J. J. Loy Grayson County representative now in Austin urges support for the road bond issue. He says Grayson must contribute one third of the money after the state offers its large county allocation and warns bad roads drive away tourists and hurt the county’s wealth.
Austin reports eighty bedridden patients plus about twenty-five other patients at the State Confederate Home Veterans Hospital totaling just over 100. The home has 257 veterans with a waiting list, hospital capacity raised to 140 beds, and Col. A. W. Taber named aide to the U C V commander with rank of Colonel, the first son of a Confederate veteran to lead the home.
John Routh, a successful small farmer, revived a worn land over 75 years of use. He milks three cows, sells two dollars of products daily, keeps hens, hogs, and cows, and raises his own maize this year. His frugal life funds daily meals and bank savings, illustrating farm progress in Garland News.
The T E L Class of the First Baptist Church met at Miss Monta Badgett's home for a business and social gathering. Miss Myrtle Badgett led the business session as Mrs Caylor read devotion and Mrs S T Montgomery offered prayers.
M N Miller and Misses Rose and Hatty Daniels and Miss Miller of Corsicana were visitors here Sunday.
Tioga June 29. Olan Van Zandt reports strong support for a county wide bond issue to fund good roads. At the Tioga Commercial Club meeting Collinsville Mayor Joe Cobler and County Commissioner Frank Winn urged passage as a sound business move and a matter of local pride.
Houston reports Texas cotton acreage for the year will be 14 percent lower than 1926 after a state-wide survey by R. M. Gordon & Co. as of June 20. The crop condition on that date averaged 80 percent of normal.
The Rotary Club program last Friday extended congratulations to The Sun for winning the Belo loving cup and $20 in gold at the Texas Press Association contest. Mr. Douglas praised the home newspaper as Fred W. Smith lauded it. discussion covered good roads and the Sherman milk plant set to open, seen as benefits to Grayson County farmers and business.
The grain crop is light in Whitewright. Farmers have threshed much of the crop and expect threshing to finish with continued fair weather. Wheat yields range from 5 to 15 bushels per acre while oats yield 10 to 35 bushels. This year’s crop is less than half of 1926.
P C Coldwell of Garland representing the firm Alexander and Coldwell spent the first of the week in charge of the local store while Mr and Mrs Alexander were away in Garland.
The county debates a $35 000 per mile concrete main road funded by state aid and a 1 680 000 grant to Grayson County. Proponents argue equity in distributing state funds for cardinal highways, while opponents say Van Alstyne seeks a favored route at county expense.
The Texas Louisiana Power Company has crews at work replacing poles and wires and improving the local light system. Upon completion, the system will be A-1, according to the local manager, and better service will be provided.
Britt W Crain Whitewright High School principal and Vida Belle Martin wed Saturday in Mineola with Rev Walter L Cannon officiating. The bride, daughter of J W and Mrs Martin, taught in Bonham schools, while the groom arrived from Clarksville last year and is noted as a leading North Texas school man. They reside with Miss Emma Dee Randle.
Mrs. W. H. Stedham receives a letter from Rear Admiral R. R. Belk nap, commander at Hampton Roads, announcing that Guy H. Stedham completed the Radio School course with CREDIT. The admiral commends his energy and progress and asks continued encouragement for his Navy career.
Misses Inez and Gladys Ray were in Dallas as visitors on Wednesday, stopping to see city sights and meet friends during their stay.
