Old-Age Pension Liberalization Has Been Exaggerated

AUSTIN large number of aged Texans believed they would qualify for pensions under the new liberalization law but the interpretation by Attorney General Gerald C. Mann proved less generous. State Pension Director W A Little said federal matching money would be available only for those in need and that aid to families could influence eligibility. The Legislature adjourned without extra funds and the pension system relies on borrowed money with a $2.3 million loan due in October. The program remains limited to needy persons and will shift to a new Public Welfare Board in September, which could revise operations.
