In a public letter Greenville Rep R G Piner Jr urged Governor O’Daniel to tell Texans the whole truth about Texas social security. He questioned pension impacts, the omnibus tax bill, and alleged influence of special interests, noting Mrs Piner’s heart attack after the governor’s June broadcasts.
New York magistrate dismisses a disorderly conduct charge against Alexander Ferguson 34 after his wife testified he verbally abused her at home. The judge said the same words in public would likely be disorderly but in the kitchen area were tolerated, underscoring context for homeowner disputes. Horses were first domesticated in Asia.
Grayson County voters rejected a countywide beer ban in a Saturday election by 266 ballots. Whitewright remained dry with 211 to 25, Denison went wet 1651 to 463, Sherman favored beer 791 to 730, Kentuckytown 15 to 1 dry, and Bethel 24 to 0 dry. Women largely voted in Whitewright as two negro voters were recorded. City poll tax receipts rule reduced turnout. Whitewright allows women to vote without poll tax.
Senator Joseph F. Guffey of Pennsylvania urged a Roosevelt third term in a radio address, labeling anti administration voices as Tories. He argued four reasons, defended his pro Roosevelt record, dismissed Burke’s opposition, and criticized press for not publishing a growing third term movement.
The revival at the Baptist Church, begun Sunday, draws growing attendance with 9 30 a m and 8 p m services. Evangelist Dr W M Wright shares world view messages. Tonight a men service invites city men. Sermon topics include Gods Fire Department and Soul Prosperity. Admission one nail.
The City Water Department announces the regular summer water rate will apply in July, August, and September with 4,000 gallons included for domestic users. An extra 6,000 gallons cost 3c per 100 gallons, or 30c per 1,000 gallons, and above 10,000 gallons is 3c per 100 gallons. One family homes may receive reduced rates for yard beautification. This season follows a wetter June with weekly rain.
The quarterly meeting of the Grayson County Woman's Missionary Union was held at First Baptist Church this morning with the theme Footsteps of Jesus. Participants included Ruth Murrell, Ira May, Mary Bremmerman, Mildred Calhoun, Rosie Lee Lamb, and Dr. W. M. Wright. Lunch followed and a business session convened at 1 PM.
J. Berkman 36 of Dallas faces eleven felony counts in a Denison case alleging an auto mortgage scheme. Arrested in Dallas, he stood before Denison justices of the peace after an examining trial. Charges include one forgery and ten swindling cases with bonds of 500 dollars each. The scheme involved cheap used cars allegedly sold multiple times and repossessed while buyers continued payments.
Morehead Kentucky reports nearly 100 deaths from flash floods that struck eastern Kentucky as cloud bursts swelled creeks to fifteen feet. Fifty mountain people died overnight with thirty eight in Morehead area and seven in Breathitt County. Sixty nine missing near Keck as crews search continues. Damage in Breathitt County pegged at about one million dollars.
In Elecity Oklahoma Whitey Long lit a firecracker with a cigarette and, after discarding the cigarette, placed the firecracker in his mouth. He lost a tooth and suffered severe lip lacerations from the blast.
The 18th annual American Legion picnic in North Texas begins next Wednesday for a four day run. Attendance is expected to set new records as crowds grow yearly. Parades of shows will offer six riding devices, seven shows, and 25 concessions with Denison and Sherman nights highlighted. Free trapeze acts, police parking, and a grand Saturday fireworks finale are planned.
The federal order closes land utilization projects including Lake Fannin near Bonham and Lake Crockett near Honey Grove. Lakes remain closed 30 to 60 days until private operators take over. Bonham Chamber appeals to Congressman Rayburn for government operation meanwhile.
Twenty first annual Texas wide American Legion convention is planned for Waco August 26 29 to promote nationalism law and order and national defense. Officials say the event will be the largest in Texas Legion history with program emphasis on present day regional problems and public concerns. Vincent Chiodo department commander of Houston leads plans and will invite guests from outside the state. Also notes that drivers who fall asleep at the wheel cause over 70000 automobile crashes each year.
A church leaders letter thanks The Sun for space during the dry campaign. It notes a dry victory in Whitewright and Grayson County with a 1,200 vote increase, condemns wet propaganda, and praises volunteers. The piece also urges temperance and governance in the county. It adds a note on tomatoes as vitamin sources for health, highlighting vitamin C and B benefits.
Whitewright recorded 6.80 inches of rain in June, up from 4.21 inches last year and 1.81 inches in 1937, with rainfall spread across the month. Six month total fell slightly from 27.56 to 26.06 inches as 12 separate rainy days were logged in June.
At the Whitewright Lodge No. 167 regular meeting officers for the Masonic year beginning June 24 were installed. L. E. Ricketts became worshipful master with the others advancing accordingly. Finis D. Stephens senior warden, T. H. Cunningham junior warden, W. H. Stedham treasurer, O. L. Jones secretary, and P. A. Short tiler. Stedham, Jones and Short were re-elected.
Dallas couple Mr and Mrs Ed K Hall long received cards from Bob Hall and wife in Houston. Last Christmas none arrived. On July Fourth a card postmarked Houston Dec 24 1938 reached them, confirming it was mailed Christmas Eve.
