Rep Sam Rayburn informed hospital officials that President Eisenhower signed House Resolution 9737 providing 2 000 000 for the McKinney Veterans Hospital for continued operation and modernization. Modernization starts next year with funds effective Jan 1 1957.
The U S Post Office Department will adopt a 13 month calendar for accounting on July 1, creating 26 paydays per year and four week months. Reports will be issued every four weeks instead of monthly, without affecting customers. The change follows long discussed plans to standardize months to 28 days and align holidays to long weekends.
The House approved a bill to raise veterans pensions and extend benefits to World War I veterans, including non disabled cases. The 364 to 51 vote followed a tense session that briefly killed the measure before sending it to the Senate.
The 1943 Whitewright High School class held a Sunday reunion at Bonham State Park with picnic lunches and the first gathering since graduation. Attendees voted to schedule another reunion in June 1959 and included numerous couples and their children from Sherman Dallas Richardson Fort Worth and other nearby towns.
Everheart Thornhill Post of the American Legion announces a Wednesday night meeting on July 4 at 8 o clock. Post commander Earl Fields says important business will be considered and officers elected for another year. A barbecue with all the trimmings is planned and members are urged to attend and support the event. Fields also notes talks with a carnival company about a summer event under Legion auspices and that there will be no Legion picnic this year.
G A Frisby a native of Tom Bean and longtime Denton used car dealer died in a Denton hospital after a long illness. A Church of Christ member and Woodmen of the World, he is survived by his wife, a daughter, a son, three sisters and three grandchildren. Funeral services were held at Pearl Street Church of Christ with burial in I O O F Cemetery in Denton. Out of town relatives attended from multiple Texas towns and California.
Mrs. W. T. Kirby of Bells dies Friday night in a Sherman hospital after eight hours of illness. Funeral at 2:30 p.m. Sunday at Bells First Baptist Church with Rev. Clayton Hicks and Rev. Allen Owens officiating. Burial in Rose Hill Cemetery, Bells. Survivors include a son, seven daughters, 34 grandchildren, 51 great grandchildren, and a sister.
Mrs. A C Darst a former Whitewright resident died at her Canyon Texas home on Sunday at age 55. Funeral services were held Tuesday at Calvary Baptist Church Canyon with burial in Dreamland Cemetery. Survivors include her husband two sons four daughters eight brothers eight sisters and eight grandchildren. A closing line notes merchants can advertise or risk losing bus iness.
In keeping with the usual custom, most Whitewright retail stores will take a holiday July 4 in observance of Independence Day. The First National Bank will be closed and the post office will follow the holiday schedule. Mail will be worked 8 to 10 am and the 9:37 am train will dispatch outgoing mail. Rural carriers will not serve routes.
A revival meeting begins Sunday at the Assembly of God Church and runs through July 14. Rev. Lionel Reed of Nacogdoches preaches with Rev. Homer Fudge assisting. Daily services at 8:00 p.m. Sunday school at 9:45 a.m. and preaching at 11:00 a.m. and 8:00 p.m.
The evangelistic team for the coming summer revival is set with The Reverend Edgar Huffstutter of First Methodist Church Plano as singer evangelist. The second annual Spiritual Life Crusade runs July 13 to 22 with morning sermon at 10 55 on A Formula For Christian Living and Communion. A Candle Light Installation for Youth Fellowship officers is Sunday at 7 30 pm and the MYF council meets at 6 30 pm.
The Senate voted 48 to 40 to add nearly $1 billion to the Air Force for fiscal 1957, defeating administration pleas for restraint. The defense bill totals $35 billion with $16.5 billion for the Air Force, and the House must act before any spending is used or impounded. Senator Symington acknowledged the victory may prove theoretical if the administration does not issue the funds.
Texas Governor Shivers reaffirmed at the Governor's Conference that President Eisenhower would carry Texas again if Adlai Stevenson is the Democratic nominee. He called it very difficult for any Democrat to defeat the President in Texas.
