Eaton’s Witty Retort Helps Career In New Jersey
Washington columnist Ray Tucker recounts how Congressman Charles A. Eaton of New Jersey defused an editor’s digging during his first run. James Kerney of the Trenton Times failed to uncover substantial dirt, noting Eaton’s Nova Scotia birth, red necktie, and pastorship of John D. Rockefeller. Eaton quipped that he was young and inexperienced, wore red ties to look better, and could not extract money from Rockefeller, leaving Kerney’s paper to back him.
