Longest Texas Legislature Adjourns On June 21

The forty sixth Legislature will adjourn the longest general session in Texas history at noon on June 21 the longest day of the year. It marks the 163rd day of the session with lawmakers in session 20 days longer than any prior Legislature.

Aid Pensioners With Negligent Families Mann

A ruling from Texas Attorney General Gerald C. Mann says eligibility for old age assistance rests on need, not whether a relative can support the applicant. The opinion, in response to a board inquiry, states the Legislature intended aid for those in need who are otherwise eligible even if a child or relative could contribute but does not.

Son of Bells Postmaster Killed by Car Sunday

Five-year-old James William McElligott, son of Mr and Mrs D T McElligott of Bells, was struck and killed by a car near his home on Sunday morning while crossing the highway to Sunday school. Glen Earnheart of Whitewright, en route to Bells for funeral arrangements, could not avoid the child. The boy died en route to Sherman hospital. Funeral services were held in Bells Monday afternoon with burial in Rose Hill Cemetery. He is survived by his parents two sisters and a brother.

Drivers Licenses Extended To April 1, 1942 Sherman

All drivers licenses in force have been extended to April 1, 1942, per J. H. Horton the Sherman examiner. Duplicates may be issued if licenses are defaced. Examiners in Sherman Tuesday 8 am to noon and Friday 2 to 4 pm. Chauffeur licenses are renewed one year from issuance and not covered by the extension.

Texas House Rejects Sixth Move On Sales Tax Amendment

The Texas House voted 91 to 55 to refuse suspending the rules to reconsider the sales tax constitutional amendment. Proponents said another attempt would be made next Monday or Tuesday.

Automobile Fatality in Kilgore Claims 17 Year Old Musser

Earl Garfield Musser. 17, son of M. H. Musser of Whitewright, died after a bicycle collision with a car in Kilgore Sunday night. Funeral services were held at 3 p.m. Tuesday in Kilgore. Born near Whitewright November 27, 1922, he was a Kilgore High School sophomore living with his uncle and aunt, Mr. and Mrs. A. B. Jones. He is survived by his parents, a Kilgore brother Johnny Musser, and another brother William Musser, killed in a similar accident three years earlier at age 17. Numerous Whitewright residents attended the service, including H. W. Key, Paul Simmons, J. Frank Russell, Otto Russell, and many others.

Dusting Fine Sulphur to Deter Chiggers Advised

Chigger plagues in the area can be reduced by dusting fine sulphur on exposed body parts. The U S Department of Agriculture says apply one pound per 1000 sq ft or 50 pounds per acre and repeat three times at two week intervals, starting with the first appearance of chiggers and after heavy rains.

Northwestern awards degree to night school student

Elizabeth Wehner, 28, becomes Northwestern University’s first night school graduate after ten years of study. She taught three nights a week for a decade, leaving her bookkeeping job to attend classes, dedicating 2,400 hours in class and at least 3,600 hours in study to earn a bachelor of philosophy.

140 Miles of REA Lines To Be Built For Fannin Areas

Bonham Texas. J B Richey reports the third Rural Electrification project for Fannin County known as class C will cover about 140 miles of lines around Ector Savoy Bonham and extensions near Trenton and Leonard. The REA loan request exceeds 140000 with maps planned for final approval. The cooperative already energizes class A and B lines totaling ~300 miles and serves many new customers weekly.

Whitewright Co-op Gin Receives Charter

The Whitewright Co operative Gin Association gained its charter announced from Austin. Capital stock stands at 50000 dollars with H H Sears T B Autrey and J H Brown as incorporators, farmers from Whitewright area. The group seeks to buy one of three local gins, with New Gin and Donigan Gin owners naming selling prices while Planters Gin has not yet bid.

Ector youth drowns near farming town

J. K. Kile, 19, son of Mr and Mrs M H Kile, living on a farm near Ector, drowned in a small creek west of Ector Tuesday. He was alone when three boys found his body in the swimming hole while they swam nearby.

Daniel W. Johnson 61 Bonham Resident Dies

Daniel W. Johnson of Bonham aged 61 died in a Bonham hospital early Monday. Funeral services were held Tuesday with burial at Sunnyside Cemetery in Savoy. Born September 9, 1877 in Savoy, he lived in Bonham 17 years and ran a furniture repair shop 12 years. Survived by wife Pearl Johnson, three foster children, two brothers R L Johnson and Roy Johnson, and a sister Iva Hollingsworth.

Senator Barkley of Kentucky said it is a possibility but not a probability that Congress will adjourn by July 15. County Grayson Beer Vote Set by County Court

Grayson County Commissioners Court set July 1 for a county-wide referendum on prohibiting beer sales with 1200 voter names on the petition. The ballot asks For or against prohibiting beer not exceeding 4 percent alcohol by weight.

Farmers Seek Grasshopper Poison In County Areas

A few Grayson County farmers mainly from Mineral Creek between Hagerman and Gordonville seek government poison through County Agent W. O. Teddlie to combat grasshoppers. Some poison is on hand from last year and more may be obtained if infestation worsens. Teddlie thinks hopper numbers are limited and he does not expect heavy damage overall.

Denison Texas may see population surge as the Red River dam and reservoir near town begin July 1. About 52 million dollars will fund six to seven years of construction attracting workers and related industries within a 100 mile radius, with estimated 45 percent of costs in wages.

The Self Grain Company in Crowell made what officials in Dallas say is the first U S government wheat loan. It used No 1 dark hard wheat with a 63 pound test and 14.85 protein. The loan was 641 cents per bushel on 1383 bushels, yielding a check for 892.03 to George Self.
