Grayson College Ex-students Disband After 33rd Meeting

The Grayson College Ex-students Association met Sunday for the 33rd and final time with nine attendees voting to disband. Mayor Sonny Smith welcomed alumni at the old campus, now a elementary school, and spoke on Whitewright growth and city prospects. The program included a violin solo by Farrell Welsch in memory of George German, devotion by Taylor Autry, a memorial service by Mrs. Marion McMillan with Welsch, and Emory Christian noting the museum relocation to the library.

Whitewright Names New Tigers Assist Coach Scotty Conley

Scotty Conley is named assistant line and defensive secondary coach for the Whitewright Tigers this fall. He played fullback at Texas A&M freshman squad, later transferring to East Texas State University. Conley, a Winnsboro graduate of 1966, coached last year in Sulphur Springs and will teach science at junior high. He and wife Glenda have a 17 month old son Chris. Conley expects a district title and views Honey Grove as key rival in District 14-A. Fires on Walnut Street shed and a harvested wheat field near Bethel Baptist Church were reported recent and minor.

Masons Plan Special Program at Whitewright Lodge

Whitewright Lodge No 167 AF and AM will hold a public meeting at 7 30 p.m. June 24 in Firemen's Hall led by Gene Shaw with district deputy grand master Jack Turner, Masonic Home and School visitors, and a 50 year service pin for W N Pierson.

Field Day Tour Planned A Progress Report

A field day and tour of the 100 acre Preston Lawrence Renner Pasture System will be held Tuesday June 22 at 10 am near Pottsboro. Lawrence, a Grayson County farmer stockman, used less feed cost during a droughty winter with strong grazing this season. Visitors will inspect Ermelo lovegrass stocked at one and a half animal units per acre. Organized by the Upper Elm Red Soil and Water Conservation District the Denison Chamber Agriculture Committee and Texas Research Foundation. Local arrangements assisted by George Morrow and Harold Skaggs. The tour starts at Holbrook's Station and Grocery on FM 996 then moves to the project site. Sultemeier said a cattleman will see this project firsthand during stress production and a systems approach to forage.

Franklin Wins Fiddler Title At Crockett Festival

Louis Franklin, a veteran fiddler from Whitewright, won the World Champion Fiddlers Festival in Crockett beating his son Larry Franklin in the final round. Louis claimed the Day’s Champion title plus a trophy and 400 dollars, marking his fourth first place in five 1971 events. Larry earned a second place ribbon as his year’s runner up. Franklin has held the World Championship five times, with a traveling trophy awarded only after three consecutive wins. He plans to keep pursuing the title, aiming for permanent possession if his son does not win it first.
