Whitewright's junior baseball team the Cubs will play on the local diamond Sunday afternoon. Opponent will be Denison or Colbert Oklahoma. The Cubs have played seven games this season winning four and losing three for a .571 percentage. Last Sunday they lost 8 to 6 at Carpenter's Bluff with Hayes starting and Fletcher relieving. Earlier they beat Carpenter's Bluff 5 to 1 and defeated Farmersville 5 to 4. Opponents so far include Denison Desert Farmersville Carpenter's Bluff and Kentuckytown.

Polio cases rise to yearly high in Texas week

New Baptist Pastor James L. Cooper begins Whitewright assignment
Rev. James L. Cooper is called as pastor of the First Baptist Church in Whitewright and begins work this Sunday. He moved from Allen where he pastored four and a half years and helped erect a new educational building and pastor’s home. Cooper, with eight years pastoral experience, holds degrees from Howard Payne College Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary and has pursued graduate work at Baylor. He and Mrs. Cooper have a four month old son, Robert Glen. He succeeds Rev. Weldon R. Drake, who resigned three months ago to lead a church in McKinney.

A. W. McNeely of the Federal Old-Age and Survivors Insurance Bureau plans visits in Sherman on June 21 and Denison on June 22. Last week 50 people from Whitesboro, Van Alstyne, Bells, Denison and Sherman met him in Sherman and Denison. 12 filed claims and seven and five claims were taken at Sherman and Denison respectively. McNeely will be at Sherman Post Office 10:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. and at Denison Post Office 8:30 a.m. to noon. He urged widows, dependent children, retirees and others to file claims.

Four Wrecks Weekly on Sherman Denison Highway 75
The Grayson County Office of the State Highway Patrol reports four to five traffic accidents weekly on the new four lane Highway 75 between Sherman and Denison. Left turns from the wrong lane and failing to signal are major causes. 97 speeding arrests were made in May on the four mile stretch. The patrol warns drivers to follow Texas law and drive to the right of traffic islands.
