Earle B. Mayfield states the Senate sub committee report clears him of any wrongdoing in Texas election. He calls the probe an attack on democracy and thanks The Dallas Times Herald for support. He pledges undivided service to Texas with no bitterness.
In Cleveland on June 10 the credentials committee of the Republican National Committee approved unanimously seating the Texas delegation led by National Committeeman R B Creager over that headed by E H R Green of Terrell son of Hetty Green.
Lucian Andrews of this city, treasurer of the National Rural Letter Carriers Association, spent two weeks in Washington pushing a bill to raise pay for rural carriers, postmasters, and postal workers. The measure passed Congress but was vetoed by the President. It would have required about sixty eight million dollars annually. It will be reintroduced next session, likely facing a fresh legislative fight. Andrews received letters from congressmen praising the carriers’ case.
A Bonham Favorite transcription details Fannin County first court sessions beginning April 9, 1838 at Jacob Black’s residence, with subsequent sessions in Warren Bois d Arc and Bonham. It notes tax rates, licenses, and unusual payment in wolf and panther scalps to the sheriff.
Mrs. J. E. Coggins reported losing a purse with several dollars south of town. A Sun lost ad led to the purse being returned hours after rural route delivery. Mrs. F. E. Church, north of town, found the purse and waited for the next Sun to learn the owner. Advertising paid.
A group of eight men fished the Washita River near Woodville Oklahoma Monday afternoon and returned Tuesday evening with a nice catch. Members include R. L. Johnson J. W. Wilson W. J. Barbee Bob Bane R. C. Hoyle J. C. Gillespie Walter Cox and Wade Sears. A thunderstorm lashed the camp Monday night but did not stop their fishing.
The harvest progress features wheat safely stored in shocks, oats and other grain falling to the sickle, cotton plowed and chopped, and corn near tasseling. Two weeks of dry weather favored farmers while a light rain would be welcome.
J. E. T. Peters, secretary of the Denison Chamber of Commerce, was chosen president of the State Secretaries Association at the executives meeting held in Mineral Wells.
The Katy pumping station in the south part of town is shut down for repairs and the city is now furnishing water for Katy engines.
Bill Young, resident on the W. L. White farm north of town, collided with a steel bridge banister after coasting down Miller hill. His auto suffered heavy damage and he sustained facial and head injuries but was not seriously hurt. He remained hospitalized several days for recovery.
Mrs. John Hoard hosted a Wednesday party for Jayne Payne of Dallas celebrating her second birthday. Guests received colored balloons, played noise contests and a fishing game with prizes for Imogene Sears Albert Lee Jackson Jr and Thomas Sears. Pink candle cake and animal shaped ice cream followed with small favors for girls and boys.
The Standard Democrat in Burlington Wisconsin has carried Foltz store ads for nearly sixty two years without missing an issue. The Waterford Post notes Halbach store ads for forty seven years with full page placements and strong backing. The piece credits long running campaigns as backbone of business and praises advertiser publisher cooperation.
The Dallas News reports 2718 farmers have entered a cotton contest to win 1000 dollars for the best yield on five acres. A sudden rise in wheat prices after the government crop estimate will add about half a million dollars to Texas growers' income as quotations jump 4 to 5 cents per bushel. Preparations proceed for the American Legion picnic July 10 and 11 at J. D. Heard’s park with attractions, concessions, fireworks, and other amusements the committee is arranging.
Three games weekly after 6 pm draw Baptists and Christians against Presbyterians and Methodists in wholesome local contests with no admission charged. Wednesday's game ended 5 to 3 in favor of the P M s.
D R Lewis and Will Looney witnessed a Van Alstyne ball game between the Toad Frogs and Grasshoppers. Whitewright spectators called it a thrilling exhibition focused more on form than feats, with the Toad Frogs represented by fat women of the town and the Grasshoppers by the lean residents.
J. R. Andrews T. J. Mize L. O. Lackey and E. B. Martin returned from Memphis Tennessee where they attended the annual reunion of Confederate veterans. The 1925 reunion will be held in Dallas.
Dorothy Lee Gordon daughter of Mr and Mrs R P Gordon ranked perfect in Sherman music memory contest with over a hundred schools entered. Of Grayson County twenty four perfects, twenty one from Sherman two from Denison and one from Whitewright. Congratulations to Dorothy a product of Whitewright schools with a history of awards in intellectual and athletic contests.
Mrs Cecil Spindle and her children returned to their Denison home on Wednesday after a week visiting relatives.
Cc B Bryant from this congressional district attends as accredited delegate with C B Dorchester of Sherman as alternate. The convention debates platform issues and vice presidential candidate. President Coolidge is likely the nominee. The resolutions committee declines to condemn the Ku Klux Klan despite R B Creager of Texas pressing the issue.
W A Nitzer and M T Gonzaulus, charged with murder in the killing of H E Showers at Beaumont on July 2 1922, were freed by Federal Judge Estes in Sherman after transfer from the county where the crime occurred.
Mr and Mrs Ira Fleming and Mr and Mrs Will Fleming plan an extended summer journey to California traveling by automobile. J R Fleming will join by rail later in the trip in California.
Henry Williams and his children spent a couple of days this week visiting. He has spent several weeks repairing threshing machines in the western part of the county and on the Plains.
Wheat and oats harvests continue this week with a late spring aiding yields. Although acreage is small, expected output per acre remains fair.
The summer program in the high school building reports fair attendance and satisfactory results. Twenty two students are enrolled for the summer work.
Washington June 9 The Senate committee upheld Senator Mayfield of Texas in his seat after finding the evidence insufficient to prove that excessive funds were spent in his campaign in 1922 by the Ku Klux Klan or any organization or individual. The decision came as Peddy’s counsel pressed for continued hearings during Congress recess.
Dr George W Truett pastor of Dallas First Baptist leads a revival in Cooper Texas with large turnout. Officials estimate more than 5 000 attendees at the Sunday night service as converts are reported at multiple gatherings.
Graves and Son bought a bull last Friday and kept it with stock near town. The bull rampaged at night, killing two horses and injuring three more before being corraled and denatured after discovery.
A blaze starting in the Cicero Smith Lumber Company paint department in Lamesa, Dawson County, at about four PM swept by a 40 mile gale to Higginbotham Bartlett Lumber yard and nearby brick structures on the square, causing an estimated loss of $500,000.
Whitewright celebrates Trinity University Waxahachie graduates with thirty eight in the class. Six earned honors including Miss Margreta Fender daughter of Rev and Mrs J F Fender of Whitewright. Local students achieved outstanding records in state colleges this year.
Misses Nelle Montgomery and Genevieve Davidson entertained twenty guests at a bridge luncheon. Sweetpea baskets decorated tables, four courses were served, and games of Bridge and Forty-Two filled the afternoon. Out-of-town guests included Mrs. A. H. Fortner, Mrs. Fountain Kimbell, and Mrs. Albert Jackson.
W. W. Welch, guest of W. F. Sanders, left last week for Tennessee and Memphis to attend the Confederate reunion. He expects a prompt return to Whitewright.
Wesley Hill recently assumed management of the Dyer and Jones drug store and has moved his family from Farmersville to occupy a Kimbell cottage opposite the Baptist Church.
Grayson County officers were warned to seek Frado Young a former Sherman resident charged by Dallas police with killing a man and wounding another in a Dallas restaurant Sunday.
Mr and Mrs Earl McElwee of Alba visited friends here on Wednesday.
Texas party officials certify Miriam A. Ferguson of Temple as the first woman candidate for governor. The state Democratic committee approves the July primary ballot and rejects removing husband James E. Ferguson due to court injunction. The list also includes candidates for US Senate, lieutenant governor, attorney general, comptroller, treasurer, and other statewide offices.
The group spent the first of the week at Devil's Den on Pennington Creek near Tishomingo Oklahoma. Other members included Lefevre Gordon Jack Webster Claud Willis Louise LaRoe Emma Davidson and Artie Young of Sherman.
The pumping station and premises have been upgraded with plaster paint and flower bed rails turning an abandoned marsh of water cattails and weeds into a demonstration of what can be achieved with a little work and small expenditure.
