J Frank Wilson ex service man purchased the 25 by 100 foot brick building adjoining Kirkpatrick Pharmacy from J B May of Savoy. He plans to lower the ceiling and replace the front with a modern facade and add other improvements. After completion a modern cafe will be opened.
Washington reports AFL Seafarers International Union calls a coast wide stoppage at 1 p m local time in a bid to force bargaining with shipowners. CIO and Navy mobilization loom as conflict with CIO unions over proposed work hours escalates. Curran of CIO Maritime Union hints at 42 hour week offer to avert strike, easing from 56 hours yet still refusing to meet employers’ demands.

Preston Ever heart Post American Legion votes to construct a Legion home in Legion Park in the town’s south side and to beautify the park with shrubs barbecue pits a croquet court and playground equipment. The fund drive aims for 7500 with about 3500 already subscribed and every member named to committees to push the campaign.
AUSTIN last minute filing adds Stevenson Moody and Sanderford to U S Senate race. Stevenson denies run and may withdraw if Connally stays on. Moody says politics over. Sanderford to stay unless Stevenson or Moody enter. Other filings include Woods and Hickman unopposed for Supreme Court, McDonald listed against J E McDonald.
General Joseph T. McNarney, commander in chief in Europe, said Germany would need to be occupied for at least fifteen years, raising his prior estimate from ten. He cited German reaction to democracy and warned that results would not be seen for at least two years.
Dr Homer Price Rainey the governor candidate stopped in Whitewright after opening his bid in Sherman Tuesday on a statewide tour. Jim Lindsey on leave from the San Angelo Standard-Times accompanied him sharing local ties and wartime reporting from Nuernberg. He urged defeating powerful vested interests and outlined proposals for health education farm life and elderly pensions as the caravan moved toward Van Alstyne and Dallas.

Deputy Constable Tom Head arrested three people from Trenton after a Saturday night automobile accident in the business section. The driver faces a driving while intoxicated charge, the wife faces drunkenness and disturbance, and a third party is charged with drunkenness. The incident occurred on Main Street when the Trenton car sideswiped another driven by W J Billner, leading to jail and court actions in Sherman.
Brig. Gen. Harry H. Vaughan says President Truman avoids attending church because secret service searches and crowding disrupt services. Vaughan spoke in Chicago at the 20th annual Reserve Officers' Association convention, explaining the religious matter reflects concern over security rather than faith.
Work is under way on a frozen food locker plant in a large concrete building north of the First National Bank. Ex service men Joe T. May and W. L. Six year old R H McKinney Jr son of Mr and Mrs R H McKinney was struck by an auto west of the C J Meador store while attempting to cross the street. Johnnie Johnson drove the car. He suffered a head injury and was treated then taken to St Vincent's Hospital in Sherman where he was reported progressing well and not seriously hurt.
High government officials weigh restoring meat rationing as Agriculture Department warns shortages may deepen. Production could drop by two billion pounds this year and another billion next year, with pork likely surplus while beef veal and lamb become tight. Any rationing would come in December or early next year, contingent on livestock feed supplies.

A devastating blaze swept the La Salle Hotel in Chicago's Loop killing at least 58 and injuring about 200.
