Wheat prices slump to 1.85 a bushel from 3.30 as storage space vanishes in Whitewright area. Farmers expect selling at current prices with losses likely, even as 33 bushel per acre yield is forecast. O. K. Feed Mill owner notes steep decline, while local bank leader pledges support and urges improved marketing strategies.
Whitewright bi district champions begin defense of Region II title in Kilgore against Elkhart after a 2-1 Coppell series win. Series set for Wednesday at 7 pm with a Thursday game and possible third game based on park scheduling. Tigers carry 20-8, Elk hart 24-3. Daniels Hodge and Pittman key in wins.
Mrs. Woody McCarley of Blue Ridge mother of Mrs. Bob Darwin suffered a heart attack at a rodeo in Lewisville and was taken to a Grapevine hospital. Ray Goodwin of Dallas, brother of Mrs. Bennie Chesser, underwent surgery at Baylor hospital. Sunday guests at Mrs. Noda Hughes home included I. W. Rogers of Leonard and several others from Trenton Bells and Ft. Worth attendance at a piano and organ recital featured Jim and John Wilson. Mr and Mrs Mickey Gentry and children visited from Clear Lake City. others from Waco and Ector joined Homer Gentry for weekend stay.
Douglas V. Neal of Whitewright was named to the straight A spring honor roll at Grayson County College. Whitewright students making the B honor roll were Nina Belle Barnes, Vanny War Carra way, Vicky Lee Hames, Charles G. Magers, William R. Mathis, Veda Dean Norwood, Larry Michael O'Brien and David Ray Wilson. It takes real foresight to labor for goals that will not be realized until the next generation.
Dallas firm Furr Realty won the $468 515 bid to construct Whitewright’s new city hall and civic center, with about 15 days before start and 270 working days to completion. The federal grant covers most costs but excludes contingencies and non building expenses, leaving the city to cover roughly 26 002. Mayor Dick Walker touted no new taxes and local hiring efforts with job interest collected at city hall.
Texas Highway Department officials told The Sun the widening and improvement of the seven mile Highway 160 stretch south of Whitewright remains active. Plans are being prepared with an expected contract in about six months, contingent on utilities along the right of way being adjusted. The project aims to widen the road from 18 to 24 feet, replace pavement with asphalt, and keep earthen shoulders, with an estimated cost of 496000 dollars.
