Whitewright voters cast ballots in the Saturday Democratic primary with many named candidates across offices. The results list governor and lieutenant governor contenders, state and local officials, and district representatives, showing vote totals for each candidate.
The government warned that the GI Bill start deadline is exactly one year away and Congress began work on a new bill for Korean War veterans. House veterans committee chair Rankin of Mississippi disclosed the move in a speech, saying a study aims to extend WWII veteran education rights to troops in the Far East.
American Legion Everheart Thornhill Post invites members to a regular meeting on Wednesday night August 2 to install new officers. A picnic report will be given and refreshments served. Installing officers include Jack Lackey as post commander Earl Blanton first vice commander Robert Doss second vice commander Malcolm Williams adjutant Rev A D Jameson chaplain Wilson Kaiser sergeant at arms Carlton Johnson finance officer J P Darwin historian and A D Jones service and child welfare officer.
A midget baseball league for youngsters under 15 and 125 pounds was organized at Denison with Richard Hawkins as president and Claud Birdwell representing Whitewright. The eight team circuit begins play Wednesday and Sunday through Aug 16 with playoffs July 19. Cubs beat Colbert 13 to 9 at Bryant Field led by Jackie Pannell’s three hits.
A 72 cent per $100 valuation property tax rate was approved for the final time by the automobile tax board. Beginning Oct 1 collection will fund general revenue schools college buildings and Confederate pension. The 30 cent general revenue levy will not be statewide after this year with remaining funds to be collected in counties under specific votes.
Detroit manufacturers report a surge in demand as scare buying drains inventories of tractors and gear. Officials note farmers stockpiling ahead of six to nine months need, a pattern tracing to Korea war fears and spreading from the West Coast nationwide. American park acreage tallies 11,696,979.27 acres.
Joe Morris Wallace told Rotarians about his trip to the Boy Scout Jamboree at Valley Forge Pennsylvania and sightseeing in Washington Philadelphia New York and Niagara Falls. He noted forty seven thousand boys attended and Rotary Club sponsorship supported his journey.
American forces halted a North Korean thrust near Pusan and retook Hadong on the south coast as U S and South Korean troops pressed on the Yongdong Hamchang front. MacArthur HQ reported no major front changes though actions continued along a 100 mile stretch to the coast. An air ground attack reportedly routed enemy forces from Hadong leaving flames.
Official returns from Grayson County districts show Charles Hughes, University law student, narrowly defeating Robert Doss for state representative, place two, by 220 votes. Other county results include Sheriff Woody Blanton with 6621 votes, and Murray Nance leading county attorney by 455, with several offices re elected or headed to runoffs.
In Wiesbaden Germany a U S Air Force spokesman said Russia has enough men and materials in East Germany to launch a war against Western Europe at any time. He warned time is running out for Russia as defenses build up and the West gains edge in ordinary war materials. The exact timing was unknown but could be this year or next.
Excessive rainfall throughout July damaged the cotton crop as cool damp conditions persisted. July total reached 6.87 inches, about three times the normal for the month, with scattered daily amounts and a year-to-date total of 32.67 inches. Whitewright notes comparatively lighter rainfall than other areas and reports a further half inch rain starting around 10 o clock this morning.
The Fifth Sunday Singing Convention will be held at the Bells Methodist Church next Sunday July 30 from 2 to 4 p m Conducted by L L Wendell of Whitewright several quartets are expected and an invitation is extended to all singers and lovers of singing to attend.

The Democratic precinct convention elected R. H. May to succeed the late J. H. Waggoner as precinct chairman after W. E. LaRoe acted as temporary chair and W. E. Badgett as secretary. Resolutions applauded Texas officials efforts to save tidelands and backing Sam Rayburn while condemning the Truman administration on states rights and centralization. A list of attendees for the county convention in Sherman followed.
President Truman asked Congress to raise 5 billion dollars in new taxes immediately to cover preparedness costs. He proposed higher corporate earnings taxes retroactive to Jan 1 and personal withholdings up 3 percentage points to 18 percent starting Oct 1, with $600 exemptions and joint returns allowed.
The Galveston City Commission voted to raise parking fines to 200 dollars for parking in the downtown area between 2 a.m. and 6 a.m. starting August 3. The move heightens the cost of living for motorists in the city core.
Albert Bartley Jr of Ladonia won the Democratic primary for county attorney in Fannin County. Bartley, UT Austin law graduate, defeated incumbent George Truett Avery by 147 votes, 3 415 to 3 268. J W Moulton won county superintendent, and several officials were elected to runoff or unopposed races.
The Restaurant and Beverage Association of Washington urged an immediate freeze and rollback of food prices in a resolution to President Truman and Congress. It cited overnight price increases of 10 to 26 percent that cafe operators said they cannot pass to consumers.
