Two Men Arrested Here After Night Patrol
Two young men in a Chevrolet roadster were arrested here Thursday about 1 a m by Officer F O Mangrum after driving slowly around town. They claimed to be from the East Texas oil field en route to Carthage Missouri and could not show ownership papers. The car had a Missouri plate and carried two buckets a siphon and about a gallon of gas. They spent the night in the city lockup before being turned over to Sheriff Benton Davis for investigation. A Sherman hold-up Tuesday night involved a man slugged at a filling station and a getaway car with a Missouri plate, similar to the arrested vehicle which bore dented sides suggesting buckshot impact.

Smith First to Plow Up Cotton in Local Campaign
J E Smith of the Luther Sears farm in Canaan became the first Whitewright area farmer to plow up cotton under the acreage reduction drive. He received a permit to destroy fifteen acres to plant feed crops as over 1 000 permits have been issued and more emergency ones expected. Contracts are being approved in Washington at about 40 000 daily and mailed to county agents for the campaign to begin in earnest after arrival of the approved contracts. Some farmers plant feed between remaining cotton rows and await contract approval before destroying crops.
