Denison reports say about twenty five Ku Klux Klan members in regalia offered help to break up spooning parties in North Grayson County. Responses were mostly “No” or fleeing on foot or by car as farmers allegedly arranged for Klan assistance to curb intimate encounters near roads and parks.
A Farm Labor Union picnic unfolds at Kentuckytown Friday and Saturday July 27-28 with an 8:30 start, Edwin Badgett welcoming, and free for all races. W. W. Fitzwater and Ed Westbrook headline talks, plus baseball and steer riding contests, as Kentuckytown and Bethel vie on the diamond.
Lausanne reports the treaty of Lausanne reestablishing peace in the Near East is signed by Great Britain France Italy Japan Greece Roumania and Turkey led by Ismet Pasha. President Schepree declared the session adjourned and a large celebratory crowds filled Lausanne. American and Turkish talks continue on a separate treaty.
Special officer J W Massey of the Katy railroad battled five hoboes late last night at Ray yards. He was overpowered and wounded in the right hand as his weapon was taken and five shots were fired. The group boarded a southbound freight and were arrested at Leonard, then turned over to Bonham authorities where two of the arrestees were found to be women. Massey’s condition is not serious.
Sherman July 23 D Matthews living near the city was severely beaten with a broomstick by M C Weaver 318 North Burdette after Weaver found him prowling about and peering in windows Matthews required fifteen stitches to his head. Weaver claimed Matthews hoped to steal to threaten his family with a shotgun kept for truck patch defense Matthews was turned over to county authorities. no charges filed yet.
A ten day revival begins this evening at the Mahurin school house northeast of town. Rev. J A Dickey pastor of the Whitewright Church of Christ will lead the meetings.
The joint commission on unification approves a plan to merge the Methodist Episcopal Church North and South, separated since 1845. The plan then moves to the general and annual conferences for ratification after Wednesday night changes deemed unimportant.
Waco Texas July 24 A statewide meeting of Henry Ford supporters will be held in Fort Worth August 13 Clyde Essex state chairman of the Ford forces announced today that Ford would be a presidential candidate and urged attendance by supporters across the state.
Miss Dorothy Ney and three others were injured when a light sedan overturned after a broadside collision on Houston Street. Amanda Fisher, driver of the other car, pleaded guilty to reckless driving and was fined $12.50 and costs.
Mr. Newell E. Skaggs and Miss Corda Nelms, residents west of town, were married last week. The couple, regarded as among the community’s best young people, receive widespread congratulations from friends.
The North Texas Baptist Encampment will run July 31 to August 10 at Woodlake between Sherman and Denison. A ten day schedule includes swimming, meals, quiet hour, classes, sermons, rest, social hours, and talks by leading ministers and laymen.
In Waco Texas on July 23 the scaffold for Roy Mitchell a condemned Black man is being erected in the jail yard just outside his cell. Workmen began sawing and hammering this morning and expect to finish the scaffold today with Mitchell offering no comment.
The district singing convention will be held at Kentuckytown Saturday evening and Sunday July 28 29. A good program has been arranged and a large attendance is expected. All lovers of good singing are invited to attend.
Sherman Texas July 24 The 1923 tax rate for the city will be unchanged at $2.25 per $100 valuation. Assessed valuations in Sherman total $12 220 000 up from $12 060 000 last year, with gains mainly from higher utilities property valuations.
Deputy Norris Smith has in his possession an old style .45 Calibre Colt pistol with a seventy two inch barrel. The pistol belongs to G. R. Shannon of Burleson who inherited it from his father, a peace officer who seized it from a horse thief about fifty years ago.
Robert C. Settle, an automobile salesman, completed a 101 hour driving marathon at Gulf Coast Speedway before entering St Joseph's Infirmary in Houston with intoxication not a bootleg event. He won $300 to fund a honeymoon as thirteen entrants began the event and Mrs Mabel Lowe fainted near the end.
Manila July 24 The Philippine legislature demands Gov. Gen. Leonard Wood be recalled at once in the wake of Cabinet resignations and a state council walkout. The recall resolution passed unanimously as Wood, now in Samar inspecting health conditions, faces anticipated action from President Harding. Strong partisan tensions followed the reinstatement of Ray Conley and Laurel’s resignation, prompting widespread political realignment.
Walker County officials plan to seek an indictment for criminal libel from the Hamilton County grand jury over a tombstone placed by R. L. Baker near Chattanooga. The stone honors his son Geo. Baker who was hanged in La Fayette for deputy sheriff murder last summer, with the inscription claiming he was unjustly executed.
St Louis July 24 Melancholia caused by the loss of 3600 in a real estate company collapse claimed the life of Mrs Elizabeth Stookey 58 of Belleville Illinois. She died in a St Louis County sanitarium after six days without food or sleep.
The speaking event advertised by the Texas Farm Bureau Cotton Association on Main Street tonight has been postponed. An announcement with the new date will be made several days in advance. Watch for the date.
Panic swept Berlin as the mark collapsed to unprecedented levels, wiping out profits and salaries. Citizens flooded Reichsbank lines for cash, banks rationed funds, and government presses churned out vast quantities of notes amid widespread fear.
Mrs J B Williams an old settler of the Tom Bean area died at her son Arthur Williams home near Tom Bean at 3 PM Tuesday. Funeral services were held at First Baptist Church Tom Bean. She is survived by sons Arthur Williams Tom Bean John Williams Oklahoma City and daughters Ida Arnold Tom Bean Emma Hecox Sherman Willie Sherrin Denison Lula Lawrence Lubbock and Mrs Miller Van Alstyne.
