Governor Coke R Stevenson announced Texas may set the lowest total tax rate since 1914 at 37c, with 35c for schools and 2c for Confederate pensions, possibly avoiding any general fund ad valorem tax. The automatic tax board will meet to fix the rate based on a formula that assumes sufficient state income to cover appropriations.

Haverford Pa. Alexander Biddle Jr., 27, son of a Philadelphia Stock Exchange executive vice president, will keep collecting his $20 weekly unemployment check as a war veteran. He says he is entitled to veterans unemployment compensation under the GI Bill and declines further comment. He lives with his wife and four children in a 10 room Bucks Lane home, a salary far above the wage.
Washington reports money in circulation at the start of the month totaled 28,239,864,335 dollars, averaging 200.30 dollars per person in a nation of about 140,987,000. The June increase was 119,780,383 dollars.
