The final date for school transfers is July 31. Applications are filed with the Board of Education secretary or county superintendents, with many from surrounding districts choosing Whitewright. New state rules require regular transfers for high school tuition aid, impacting timing.
John C. Russel a longtime farmer near Whitewright died of a heart attack at his home. Born in Mississippi on December 24 1848 he came to Texas over fifty years ago and lived on his farm for 52 years. He married Elizabeth Barry in 1876 and had four children two sons and two daughters. three survive. Funeral held at his residence with Rev. J L Truett and Rev. W N Carter officiating and burial at Oak Hill Cemetery. Nephews served as pallbearers and many relatives attended.
Local gins are being prepared for the upcoming season with repairs and additions. Planters Gin Co. office improved with larger windows and new paint. White & Donigan gin adds gas in its office. Greenville parties near completion on a new plant, awaiting cotton cleaners and final 40 by 40 seed cotton house.
A truck caravan showcasing International Harvester models spent Friday afternoon in Whitewright. Manning Clark Meador sponsored the event with Ben Roberts in charge and Dick Barbee driving a truck. The tour, led by a former Whitewright resident, covers nearly two thousand miles across Texas.
The Thomas F. Pickerill Service reports a complete success of the back-to-the-farm movement with more supporters than ever before joining rural revival efforts.
The Whitewright Board of Education maintains top state and Southern Association ratings for its high school, matching only Sherman Denison and Whitesboro in Grayson County. The Texas Louisiana Power Company crew has completed major rebuilding of Whitewright's local distribution system and high voltage lines to nearby towns. Poles were moved to alleys, improving street appearance, and crews will shift to Leonard soon as the system is described as first class and fully improved.

Louis F. Southerland son of Mr and Mrs L F Southerland of Trenton wins a prize for original ideas in a memorial building design announced at MIT where he is completing his architecture degree. He will receive his degree in January. Southerland studied architecture three years at the University of Texas.
Miss Louise Echols visiting in the home of her brother in law Dr. R R McDaniels of Quanah underwent an appendicitis operation at Quanah hospital Monday morning. By Wednesday reports say she is getting along nicely at her bedside.
Mrs. Neville Pierce of Dallas is visiting her parents Mr. and Mrs. O W Myrick, spending time with family.
The Preston Everheart Post American Legion grew from forty to sixty two members, surpassing its quota by two. A campaign to reach sixty was completed last week. Chesley Rutledge promised a banquet if the quota was met, now planned as a picnic lunch near town with timing to be announced. The post, active for six years, sponsors an annual American Legion picnic and supports community betterment.
Farmers report cotton fields look promising with minimal insect damage. Two weeks of ideal weather boost early bolls blooms and squares while late fields fruit rapidly. If favorable conditions continue, Whitewright may gin a bale by August 15 and crop prospects uplift local business this fall.
The state wide election showed two amendments pulling roughly even in overall balloting. Rural areas favored no change while large cities like Dallas San Antonio Austin Fort Worth El Paso Houston and Beaumont supported the measures by wide margins. Incomplete returns reported 14 333 for Governor salary increase 7 263 against and 15 065 for nine member Supreme Court 6 963 against.
Seven members of a single family drowned after a cloudburst swept a river party toward the Bourbon bridge on the Meramec River at Moselle. The tragedy occurred late Sunday as the group was nearing the bridge.
Gov. Dan Moody signals possible veto of 4 million dollars from new appropriation bills. He envisions reducing the general fund to 45 million and a state ad valorem rate as low as 25 to 28 cents. Wink resident Bob Williams alias Joe Rachate, a peace officer, was returned to Oklahoma authorities as an escaped convict. He had fled the McAlester penitentiary after ten months of a twelve year sentence for train robbery. Williams later lived in Norfleet Arkansas where he served as chief of police for six years. His wife, hospitalized with typhoid, is near death and unaware of the arrest.
Maynard and their children left Wednesday to visit Teague, continuing a family trip with planned time away from home.
The sixth annual American Legion picnic closed Saturday after a three day run with ideal weather and large orderly crowds. Ex servicemen day opened events, Sherman Legion drum corps performed, contests for string bands and fiddlers drew 18 participants, and Prof George Dugan's Bells orchestra provided music. Baseball games between Randolph and Whitewright drew fair crowds, with a 3 3 tie in extra innings and a Friday 5 to 3 Randolph victory.
In Whitewright during Tuesday’s election two constitutional amendments were decided. One would raise the governor’s salary from 4000 to 10000 dollars and the other would expand the Supreme Court from three to nine members. Whitewright endorsed both measures with 51 ballots cast. 32 for and 19 against the salary increase, 29 for and 22 against the Supreme Court expansion. The statewide turnout was light, but Whitewright sent a larger-than-typical share of ballots relative to its qualified voters.
New York cotton futures climbed over 3 dollars a bale with July futures at 18.50 cents and October at 18.95 cents as heat in the Southwest and short interest spurred buying. Kansas City wheat also rose sharply with futures up 8 to 8.5 cents and top cash bids at 1.67 a bushel on strong exports and crop optimism.
