Mayor R R Summers announced the city will haul off cans and other unburnable rubbish next Tuesday. Householders are asked to place such rubbish in alleys or containers for convenient loading to prevent water holding items that breed mosquitoes.
A delegation of three Whitewright Future Farmers of America members Norman Harper O W Barker John Paul Stephens and Pat Russell travel to Houston for the 23rd annual Texas FFA convention July 11 13 They join about 3000 FFA members at the Shamrock Hotel with plans including tours to San Jacinto and Battleship Texas a Texas League game swimming at the Shamrock pool and a torchlight coronation ceremony Awards exceeding 5000 will be presented to top FFA members and area sweethearts.
Washington report says the Army may add six combat divisions and call two or three National Guard divisions into federal service this fall or next year. No final decision on the 21 guard divisions or the proposed three new regular divisions has been made. Two guard divisions are in Japan with another slated for Europe as Western Europe Defense Organization forces expand.
Denison records its sixth polio case since June 30, with Richard Harvey, 29, a Parkland Hospital patient and Stratton-Olds Cadillac employee, among Grayson County cases. Harvey, a father of four, lives at 1511 West Owings and is described as a mild case by his physician. he is the county's second adult victim after Ennis Ray Simpson, who died last week.
Secretary Charles F. Brannon announced a national average wheat price of 2.18 dollars per bushel for the 1951 crop, up from 1.99 dollars for 1950. There will be no acreage allotments or marketing quotas for 1952, with loans and purchase agreements available through January 1952 and maturing by April 30, 1952.
Mrs Earl Benson, injured in a Washington area auto crash and long hospitalized at Bethesda Naval Hospital, expects to return home in two or three weeks. Her daughter Lt Anna Joyce Benson is a nurse there and Mrs Benson thanks friends and the Sunday school class for support and cards.
The Agriculture Department reports Texas 1951 cotton acreage at 13,125,000 acres, the largest since 1933, up 18.6 percent from last year. National acreage totals 29,510,000 acres, with production estimates due August 8. Drought delayed planting in several regions, but most farmers achieved planned increases.

President Truman told the Soviet leadership there will be no war if Russians learn the peace aims of the American government. He cited the horror of war and hinted the U.S. would use atomic weapons if forced, delivering the message from Washington after Congress adopted a resolution of goodwill.

The biggest flood in Kansas history struck Eastern cities Wednesday night, causing at least two deaths. Hundreds marooned, 10,000 forced to flee. Extensive damage to homes, farms, and businesses as rail and road routes blocked. Aid from Air Force, National Guard, Coast Guard, Marines, and Red Cross mobilized. Hardest hit include Manhattan, Strong City, Council Grove, Ottawa, Marion, and Florence.
Senator Walter F. George of Georgia calls for a 6 billion dollar reduction in federal spending to avert a large tax increase. He asserts such a cut could ease passage of a smaller tax hike and predicts Congress will approve only one more major tax increase amid the defense buildup. He notes the public will resist further tax rises unless a global war occurs.
Gov. Allan Shivers approved a deed ceding Perrin Air Force Base property to the federal government in a move to make Perrin a permanent installation. Grayson County deeded the property and state jurisdiction over the area will pass to Washington. A Wherry Housing Act development may follow the federal acceptance.
The Dallas News featured Mrs. Jo Russell Turner, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Otto Russell of Whitewright, who drives about 800 miles monthly in Dallas County and serves as Dallas County's assistant home demonstration agent. She led a trip to the State 4 H Round-Up in College Station and works with 36 clubs and over 1,300 girls teaching table settings cooking sewing and related crafts. Plans for next year include milk product demonstrations as the Turners recently moved to 2904 Holm Drive Garland.
Royce Jones of the local Civil Service board announces an exam for the Whitewright post office substitute clerk carrier at $1.31% per hour. Eligibility requires residence in or bona fide patronage of the Whitewright delivery area. Applications and details available at Whitewright post office or the 14th Civil Service Region office in Dallas.
In a letter to The Sun, George Burkett of Decatur Texas sends two dollars for a one year paper and recalls Grayson College Exes homecoming. He notes old friends, changes in Grayson and Fannin Counties and jokes about aging doctors and blondes vs gray hair.
Washington reports the Defense Department boosted August draft calls from 22000 to 35000, including 7000 for Marines, with about 34000 more slated for September. The Marines join the Army in August inductions. September expects 28000 to Army and 6000 to Marines. The Air Force remains exempt. The Marines seek 204000 by June 30, with actual strength near 196000.
Texas A and M notes a continued poultry boom through 1950 into 1951. County agents report thousands of new and remodeled poultry houses and shelters. East Texas broiler houses rise from about 300 to over 1,400. More than 45 million broilers were produced in 1950, creating demand for additional processing plants.

At Kaesong the Allied newsmen convoy was barred by North Korea delaying the third day of peace talks. Vice Admiral C Turner Joy warned the session would not open until the press party passed. Joy and the U N delegation remained at the peace camp awaiting passage to the conference site. The delay followed a North Korean demand linked to press access.
Ida Baptist Church will start a 12 day revival on July 18 led by evangelist Rev. G I Norris of Waco and singing by Oneus Wells of East Sherman. Pastor Rev. W Frank Smith officiates nine months with 10 members added and a training union of 56 enrolled. A church building program's concrete foundation is being poured as work continues.
The County Superintendent reminds families transfers must be filed in July to move a student to a school outside the home district. A transfer slip signed by a parent and submitted to the county office is enough. Blank slips are available at the office. July 31 is the deadline.
