July Fourth Death Toll Hits 571 in 3-Day Weekend
The three day Fourth of July weekend killed at least 571 people, the worst safety record since 1941 and the third worst in twenty years. From Friday 6 p.m. to Monday midnight the deaths included 306 traffic, 192 drownings, 4 firework incidents, and 69 from other causes. The overall toll trails the 1941 record of 628 and the 1939 total of 596. The traffic deaths reached the third highest in twenty years, and drownings were the highest in two decades.
Electric Power Conservation Urged in Dallas
Dallas Power and Light asks commercial and industrial customers to conserve power amid the record high demand. Officials visited major users to cut lights air conditioning and idle equipment. Commercial manager C A Tatum warned July and August could push demand higher due to hot weather.
