J H Norris 67 a former Whitewright resident died Wednesday night in a Shafter California hospital. Funeral and burial will be in Shafter on Friday. He was born October 18, 1896 in Hunt County, married Hazel Williams in 1917, and was a Bethel Baptist Church member. Survivors include his wife, two daughters Velma Henderson and Oleta Wilson, a son Billy Joe Norris, three brothers John Lee and Philip Norris, two sisters Mattie Hastings and Ritha Sanderson, and four grandchildren.
Mrs. Edgar Sowels of Leonard died Tuesday in the Whitewright Nursing Home. Funeral services are set for this afternoon in Trenton with burial in Baily Cemetery. She had lived in Whitewright, then Leonard, with early years near Tom Bean and Orangeville. Born January 8, 1896 in Shelbyville Tennessee, she married Mr. Sowell in 1919 at Greenville. Survived by husband, son T. C. Lowles of Leonard, daughter Mrs. John D. Rowell of Fort Worth, brothers Rufus Carlton of Whitewright and Claude Carlton of Naples, sisters Mrs. Alton Cunningham of Blue Ridge and Mrs. T. P. Hobbs of Quinlan, and seven grandchildren.
Royal Rogers of Durant Oklahoma died Monday in Durant. Funeral services were held in Durant and burial followed at Cannon Cemetery near Whitewright. He was brother to Homer Tate of Whitewright and survived by four sisters and three brothers.
Rescue services launched a police ban push after Sweden's ice driving craze claimed several lives this week. Stockholm diver Sven Nahlin said an average of one car a day plunged through thin ice in rivers and lakes. he retrieved five bodies that week, three of them yesterday.
E. W. Harmon of Blue Ridge has leased the building next to the pool hall on Main street north side and will open an auto supply store when ready. Shelving is being installed in the building owned by Charlie Ayres and Paul Stephens. Harmon runs a similar store at Blue Ridge and operates independently of chain stores.
Rep. Howard Smith predicts the civil rights bill will pass the House in some form despite constitutional concerns and vagueness. He says public accommodations provisions resemble Kennedy era proposals deemed unconstitutional and doubts Southern lawmakers would vote for it under any circumstances.
