Vaccination wipes out Bangs disease in dairy herds
In Berkeley two UC veterinarians report Bangs disease or undulant fever in cattle is completely wiped out in some dairy herds by vaccination with the brucella abortus strain 19. Where not fully eradicated a large drop occurred, such as Del Norte County where diseased cows fell from 37 percent in 1940 to 5 percent in 1947 under a new state mandate for calf vaccination. Undulant fever can pass to humans via infected milk.
