Two local cafes announce fund raising for the March of Dimes. City Cafe will donate all coffee sales Friday morning, and Craig's Cafe will host two morning and afternoon sessions Tuesday February 1.
County commissioners issued a formal warning that dumping trash near county roads will be prosecuted. Judge J N Dickson cited numerous complaints and noted penalties under the Texas Penal Code, including fines up to 200 dollars and daily violations for ongoing dumping.
AUSTIN Governor Shivers named Muldrow of Brownfield as the new state secretary, succeeding Everett Fulgham of Lubbock who resigns after serving the past year. Fulgham will become vice president of First National Bank in Lubbock. Muldrow, 45, is a farmer lawyer and civic leader.
A Monday to Friday lunch plan lists Irish Stew with sides on Monday through Salmon Croquettes on Friday. Menu items include desserts, beverages, and standard sides such as salads, corn, and potatoes. Benjamin Harri Bowman 66 died Wednesday in McKinney Veterans Hospital. He lived on Whitewright route 4 before moving to Van Alstyne. Survivors include his wife four daughters Janice Ingram Dallas Wanda Buck Sherman Peggy Ann Bowman Barbara Ellen Bowman Van Alstyne son Ben Bowman Plano one grandchild one brother E. A. Bowman Dallas one sister Mrs C W Tree Whitewright. Funeral services are this afternoon in Van Alstyne.
The Senate civil jurisprudence committee set a public hearing for Feb 2 on a bill to permit Tar rant and other large counties to tax divorce suits to fund child support offices. The proposal would impose a 5 tax on divorce filings in counties with populations over 350000. A separate note mentions Mengale villagers called to their mission church by a bell donated by an American railroad.

In Austin a bill named for Sen. Kilmer Corbin would require voters to state party affiliation when buying a poll tax and would bar independents from party primaries. Corbin says independents would be unable to vote in a primary, while exemptions would receive registration certificates from the county tax assessor-collector.
Washington reports Post Office Department officials are at odds over how large a postal rate rise to seek from Congress. A congressional source says no final decision on the amount has been made though proposals are due in bill form soon. President Eisenhower's budget calls for a $400 million revenue rise, about $135 million more than two years ago.
Newton V. Cole the local chair says the porchlight fund drive is delayed to Monday week February 7. Wilson Kaiser leads the porchlight committee setting that date. As of Wednesday afternoon the drive has collected 233 dollars with events planned including a benefit basketball game and coffee hours at City Cafe and Craig's Cafe. Clarence Tillett heads the business district canvassing sub-committee and Burgher Vestal leads the schools sub-committee with reports completed.
A Texas Senate bill by Senator Strauss would license all auto dealers and ban selling cars that were once transferred as new. It limits dealers to makes on their license, requires a $10,000 surety bond, and imposes up to $500 fines and a year in jail for fraud or false advertising. Fees: $35 for new and used licenses, $25 for used, plus $10 per extra location.
County committee urges cotton farmers to release any unused 1955 acreage by April 18 1955 to allow reallocation to other farms based on past acreage, labor, and facilities. Released acreage counts toward future allotments if cotton was planted in 1953 1954 or 1955. Papers available at the County ASC Office.
