The federal funded farm shop training school in the Grammar School basement announced new equipment including an acetylene welding setup and band saw. It will operate under relaxed age regulations allowing adults from any age to enroll, with no course fee and only costs for any wood purchased. Classes run 6 30 to 9 30 PM five days weekly.
Federal automobile use tax stamps went on sale Monday at the Whitewright post office. Postmaster T. J. Lilley said stamps were selling fast at 2.09 dollars for the remaining fiscal year through June 30. Drivers must place the stamp on windshields or instrument panels by February 1 to avoid penalties, and a stamped penny postcard returnable to W. A. Thomas of Dallas makes the total due 2.10 dollars at the stamp window.
In the interest of National Defense the Red Cross will sponsor a first aid course in Whitewright. A licensed instructor will be sent and graduates will receive a certificate. Open to any man or woman in or around Whitewright. register with Floyd Bassett as requested by the local Defense Coordinator.
New Orleans reports 19 cent cotton for October at 19.09 cents a pound marking the first time above 12 years. Demand driven by bids for Government loan cotton far exceeding January quota with bids rumored over 2 million bales while government sales capped at 300,000 bales. Interior reports farmers holding for higher prices add to the bullish outlook.
The Interstate Commerce Commission approved a 10 percent rise in railroad passenger fares, expected to raise about 45 million dollars annually based on 1941 business. The increase covers most fares except the 1 cent per mile military furlough rate and some extra-train charges, and takes effect ten days after tariffs are filed, likely between February 1 and 4.
R B Cruse reports 1941 Texas Hybrid Seed Corn results from Texas Agricultural Experiment Station. Limited quantities available locally at about $1 per acre. Texas Hybrids Nos 12 8 and 6 outperform open pollinated varieties and suit Texas conditions. Contact Cruse or Lester Haile to place orders for seed.
Farmers and wives will meet at the Kentuckytown school house Tuesday January 27 at 7 p m to discuss the Food For Defense program. Speakers include Miss Eunice King Rex Crews Arthur Badgett and Mrs Floyd Everheart. Mrs C M Fulton invites the public to attend.
The Navy reports the American steamer City of Atlanta sunk off Cape Hatteras with 44 missing from a 47 crew. Latvian freighter Cilivaira probably sunk off the Atlantic coast, with 21 crew ashore in Charleston and nine rescued by the Brazilian steamer Bury to New York.
A Tennessee letter from a former resident in Germany slipped past a Nazi censor with the line We are all happy here, but would be happier in Monte Vista. Monte Vista is identified as a local cemetery, revealing the intended location.
The Red Cross asks all who have not donated to support emergency war relief. The week’s gifts include individuals such as Winnie Hamilton C Dates Rev Fender Mrs Fender C A Wilson Mrs Cora Simmons Oran Sears Mrs Oran Sears M P Garrett and the American Legion Auxiliary totaling 14.25 with previous records bringing the grand to 369.25. Ralph Giesenhower treasurer Grayson County Chapter praises the effort and Sherman Chamber of Commerce manager Frank Thompson calls it excellent.
Shareholders of the Planters National Bank are mailed checks for a dividend of 1.00 per share. The bank closed January 1, 1932 after paying depositors in full and half par value on shares. Liquidating agent Guy Hamilton notes further small dividends possible before final liquidation.
George Slaughter, chairman of the state AAA committee, says notes bearing no interest attract every Texas farmer. Cotton crop insurance offers 50 or 75 percent coverage and can be used as collateral for crop advances. Deadlines begin Jan 31 for Cameron, Hidalgo, Starr and Willacy counties with other dates in March. The Pole star can be seen on clear nights in the United States.
About 45 women attended a Denison district Red Cross meeting at the Baptist Church. Miss Jennie Jackson outlined future work and Miss Vernie Hancock spoke on home nursing and first aid. A Red Cross work room is being prepared on the second floor of the First National Bank building with sewing machines in use Tuesday through Thursday. Classes in home nursing and first aid will be formed with instructors supplied from Denison, free of charge.
Whitewright ranks third in Grayson County for bank deposits and loans as of December 31 1941 with Denison leading deposits and Sherman leading loans. County totals show Denison deposits 8030932.77 loans 2284695.73. Sherman deposits 7471290.47 loans 2407415.34. Whitewright deposits 630652.11 loans 304158.29.
Rev W W Adcock pastor of Whitewright Methodist Church will host a fifteen minute religious program on KRRV Sherman each Friday 4 to 4 15 beginning Friday January 23 Religion For Today will be the theme with All Hail the Power of Jesus Name as the hymn He has previously broadcast on KRVV and returned to radio after earlier winters 1938 and 1939.
President Roosevelt announced a plan to gradually transfer U S citizens fighting under non American flags to American armed forces. He said transfers cannot be rushed without harming units and urged Americans to remain in their current branches while arrangements are finalized.
Washington Senator O Daniel said Wednesday night he will seek re election this year. He urged Texas voters to pay their poll taxes before the January 31 deadline.

Proceeds go to the speech department treasury with tickets ten cents available at the door.
The City Commission revises franchise deals with utilities in Whitewright under a new state law allowing a 2 percent gross receipts tax. Community Natural Gas Co. approved the revenue plan, boosting annual city income from 25 to about 250 dollars. Southwestern Bell’s renewal is on hold to assess benefits of switching to 2 percent of gross income.
About 15 farmers from Kentuckytown met at the Kentuckytown school house at the invitation of R. B. Cruse to form a farm school. Meetings will be at 7 p.m. Wednesdays for several weeks with topics on the 1942 government farm program cattle diseases poultry culling pruning spraying dairying and improved seed. Next week the group meets with the Kentuckytown Home Demonstration Club to discuss baby chicks with Mr Cruse addressing the group.
Grayson county residents bought 333 39 10 dollars of defense stamps and bonds in the 15 day period ending December 31. The county’s total sales reached 895 408 40 and Denison led with 410 948 20 while other towns posted smaller sums.
