Whitewright Historical Society opens the year with a January 18 meeting at 7 30 p m in the Bank Room. President Bill McFatridge previews a program on barbed wire history its impact in Texas and a display by James Bryant.
Wayman E. Register, Social Security Regional Commissioner in Dallas urged Medicare beneficiaries to review explanations of benefits for medical services and report any discrepancies to the nearest Social Security office. Most errors are honest mistakes, but some may indicate other issues.
A Grayson County report shows November sales of Series E and H United States Savings Bonds at 86041 dollars with eleven month sales at 1 093 622 dollars reaching 109 percent of the 1970 goal. Texas month sales totaled 14915 027 while January through November sales reached 166 883 983 for 93 percent of the 179 9 million goal. Nationally new E and H bond purchases in November were 373 million with first eleven months sales at 4 281 billion, up 5.8 percent from a year earlier. Exchanges of E for H bonds totaled 212 million in eleven months, up 27 percent from 1969. The report also notes a Medicare fraud alert in Oklahoma and a Pawhuska ambulance operator convicted and placed on three years probation.
Bill Dyer a prominent local businessman and Monsanto agent from Whitewright joins 149 participants from ten county District Four at Texas A&M University College Station for a two day conference to study state agriculture issues. Ten Grayson County farmers ranchers and agriculture lists will attend alongside Dyer. other attendees named include Marcus Brown Roy Chumbley Robert Welch Rhamy Morrison John K Hynds Charles Fry Gene Spegal Stanley Oakley and Charles Parkman. Topics include weed control for blackland crops and pastures insect and disease control cotton and grain sorghum production cattle nutrition and reproduction cow calf operations small grains and downy mildew and southern corn blight.
William E Badgett a Whitewright citizen active in civic affairs and a Sanitarian with the Texas State Health Department was recently honored by state agencies. He supervises nursing homes food stores and water and sewer plants in small towns and Lake Texoma resorts and works with Sherman Dennison officials and the Corps of Engineers on the lake. He monitors water and air pollution and will soon hold the title Environmental Health Specialist.
At about 9 PM Joe Canafax driving with his son Bony Sanders struck and killed a large wolf estimated at 80 pounds. The animal was mounted on a pole near the driver’s home close to Bethel Baptist Church for public viewing.
Lone Star Gas Company executives witnessed the signing of the Dallas Fort Worth Regional Airport gas service contract. Louis B. Haley George F. Peck Jr C L Neaves Charles G. Barnett and William Porterfield represented Lone Star. Tom Sullivan signed for the Airport Board and George Peck signed for Lone Star.
A January 13 1971 accident at W W Grain And Elevator owned by J H Sonny Gosnell involved a large truck backing to unload ammonium nitrite. The truck hit the northeast corner of a satellite storage bin, toppling it and causing extensive damage. No workers were injured. A pipe spout and frame were damaged and one pipe spout lay across a railroad spur.
