Counties to Get Aid Plan Abandoned by State Officials

A plan urged by Norman Taber to issue nearly 200 million dollars in state bonds to retire county road bonds was abandoned this week. The proposed simpler program would have the State pay principal and 2 percent interest on outstanding county road bonds. The plan, developed by the State Association of County Judges and Commissioners led by Judge Jake Loy, would use surplus from the 1 cent of the 4 cent gasoline tax for 25 years to relieve county debt service. The Highway Department and county bodies reportedly support the change as immediate relief to county funds.
