GI Farm School Opened in Whitewright
A GI farm school began here last Thursday, with the first class held Wednesday night in the High School agricultural room. Rex Cruse, formerly a Whitewright agriculture teacher, is the instructor and now resides in Sherman. Enrollment is expected to grow as more GIs transfer from other schools. Under the GI Bill of Rights, enrolled ex servicemen who meet requirements receive 65 dollars a month while attending. married men receive 90 dollars. All World War II veterans farming and meeting requirements are eligible.

Denison Dam to Undertake 2.25 Million Work Program
U S Army Engineers plan a 2.25 million dollar expansion at Denison dam. Resident engineer Richard C. Pyle says work starts around April 1 and reaches full pace within two months. Projects include a second generating unit, penstock and surge tank, admin offices, roads to docks, an overlook shelter, dam riprap extension, with contracts for non generator work to be advertised January 16 and the generator contract let between April 15 and May 1.

Washington reports James F. Byrnes has resigned as secretary of state. President Truman taps Gen. George C. Marshall to succeed him effective January 10. Mercy Case Pays Back $615000 With Final Bequest
In 1911 a sick charity patient at Mercy Hospital received care without payment. A Paris based benefactor Ferris Thompson sent yearly donations totaling 615000 after his friend’s treatment. His widow Countess De Beau Repaire continued gifts. Mrs Thompson died August 20 in New York, leaving 200000 to Mercy, bringing the total to 615000.

Samuel Fane Melugin Jr. a former Savoy resident and Dallas youth, died from injuries after a bus crash near Capeville five miles south of Farmersville Tuesday evening. Passenger Bill Jordan 17 of Bonham was lightly injured. no bus passengers were hurt. Funeral held in Dodd City with burial at Sunnyside Cemetery. He was born March 8, 1930 in Dodd City and survived by parents, a brother, a sister, and grandparents.
