First Grand Union flag linked to present Stars and Stripes
The first colonial flag resembling today’s Stars and Stripes was the Grand Union flag or Congress Colors. It had thirteen red and white stripes and a blue canton with St George and St Andrew crosses, symbolizing union with Britain. It flew aboard Colonial Fleet ships in the Delaware River in December 1775 and was later carried by Marines and American Bluejackets in the West Indies in 1776.
