Henry Wallace announced Monday night he would run as an independent candidate for President in 1948 on a peace and prosperity platform. He attacked both major parties, saying neither stands for peace and a new political alignment is needed to meet the menace of war.
Chicago report from the National Safety Council shows 1947 traffic deaths around 32,500 with travel 12 percent higher than 1941. The November toll fell 5 percent from 1946 and 11 month total was 29,140, yielding the lowest mileage death rate on record.
Judy Lee Alexander of Albany won first prize in a Lakota Council Degree pageant at Fairmont School, defeating infant junior and senior groups. The Veterans Administration announced bid openings on January 5 for new Texas hospitals in Big Spring and Bonham. Army engineers will handle bids, with Big Spring bids from Albuquerque New Mexico and Bonham bids from Tulsa Oklahoma. The Bonham plans include a 50 bed hospital and an additional 300 bed domiciliary facility, totaling about 5.5 million dollars for the two Bonham sites.
New York. General Electric on Tuesday said it will cut prices an average 5 percent on a wide range of products effective January 1. The reductions, GE said, will save consumers about 50 million dollars in 1948 and aim to curb inflation and spur other firms to follow. President Charles E. Wilson noted profits were not a motive, nor new tech.
