The Treasury delays the $2 bill release to April 13 1976 Thomas Jefferson birthday. The new note features Jefferson’s portrait by Gilbert Stuart on the front and Brumhall s The Signing of the Declaration of Independence on the back. More than 225 million bills will be issued by that date.
Mr and Mrs Joe Cureton of Whitewright attended the christening in San Antonio of their granddaughter Michelle Lynne Peckham at Travis Park United Methodist Church. The ceremony was conducted by Chaplin M O Slawson with Jordan River holy water. Family members present included Tressa Van Peckham and Lawrence N Peckham, and Russell Peckham. luncheon followed at the Peckham home with Edgar and Wesley Dorsett and others.
Edith Jester announces mailed ballots to members for Man Woman and Farmer of the Year with a Whitewright Chamber dues check enclosed and a self addressed envelope to Charles Truksa. Return by March 15 for the April 3 banquet at the grade school cafetorium with guest speaker John Jackson of Fort Worth.
Whitewright Rotary Club, active in District 581, honored Sam Montgomery a former Whitewright schools superintendent as a Paul Harris Fellow by contributing $1,000 to the international scholarship fund. Governor Emory Christian attended the banquet at the elementary school cafetorium and presented the pin. The event also crowned Philip Earnheart as the club’s newest grandfather, receiving a walking cane as thanks, with The Voyagers from Grayson County College performing.
The No 8 Whitewright Tigers suffered a 51 to 45 loss to the Allen Eagles ending their bid to reach the Austin state Class A tournament. The Grayson County College gym hosted the sectional matchup as Whitewright’s hopeful run fell short in a tight playoff clash.
Supt. Dick Capps announced that April 30 is the deadline for students to file transfers into the Whitewright school district. Transfer forms are available at the school. Capps stressed the requirement that any transfer student must file before the deadline. The university of Texas deadline implied in the report is noted but unclear in phrasing.
Paul Keating named chairman of the 1976 Easter Seal campaign in Grayson County by Mrs. E A Haring. About 300 volunteers will mail 24 000 envelopes to Sherman Denison Van Alstyne Whitesboro Gordonville and Whitewright with a goal of 17 500. Last year 17 831 02 was raised and 92 percent stays in county for handicapped aid including speech hearing physical therapy and preschool services.
Whitewright observes FFA Week February 21 to 28 in a proclamation by Mayor Dick Walker. He praises FFA for leadership, cooperation, citizenship, agricultural education, and patriotism, urging residents to honor FFA members across Texas and the United States. FFA includes Grayson County vocational agriculture students with both boys and girls participating in loag classes nationwide.
Charlie J Kaiser 76 retired Pilot Grove store owner died Friday February 20 1976 in a Whitewright nursing home Services were held Sunday afternoon at 2 in Barnhart Funeral chapel Whitewright with ministers Grady Langford and the Rev Bob Bryant officiating Burial was in Pilot Grove cemetery He was born in Trenton son of John Kaiser married Noma Wilson May 9 1917 in Leon ard He survived by his wife one son Y B Kaiser Plano one daughter Mrs Fred Starr Garland two brothers Johnny Kaiser Dallas Mack Kaiser Richardson two sisters Mrs Genevieve Rosso Huntington Ark Mrs Pauline Estes Austin eight grandchildren seven great grandchildren Pallbearers Kris Joe Barry Kaiser Timm Starr Greg Grooms Cary Gooch John Potts Jim Allen.
Services were held Saturday at Earnheart Funeral chapel in Whitewright for Mrs. James W. McConnell a Savoy housewife who died February 19 1976 in a Dallas hospital. The Rev. Leon Martin and the Rev. Lawrence Smith officiated and burial followed in Sunnyside cemetery Savoy. She was a Grayson County native daughter of Ed Elliott and his wife and wife married James McConnell on April 8 1939 in Sadler. Survived by husband two sons Alvin of Savoy and Richard of Pottsboro three daughters Betty Barron of Sanger Ann Ooten of Denison and Jean Haught of Bonham three brothers Wallace Elliott Dallas Edwin Elliott San Antonio and Bill Elliott McKinney two sisters Vera Kennedy Denison and Hazel Chevis Port Arthur and six grandchildren. Nephews served as pallbearers.
Vera Hickman of Whitewright learns her sister Sara Kirkpatrick died Sunday February 23 at 10:30 in San Antonio. Former daughter of Rev. and Mrs W A Kirkpatrick, she is to be buried in San Antonio with services Tuesday. A Presbyterian church member, she leaves sisters Velma Higgins of Bonham and Mrs Guy Dillon and son Joe B Dillon of Dallas.
Whitewright's high-flying Tigers rose to No. 8 in the Texas Association of Basketball Coaches Class A poll. Broaddus leads, followed by Winona and Brookshire Royal, with Wall Brazos Wheeler Stratford and others rounding out the rankings.
Supt Dick Capps announced an open house for Whitewright Schools on March 9 inviting all grades from elementary to high school, with lunch, classroom visits, and questions. Schools will showcase programs during Public Schools Week March 15, inviting community feedback and public evaluation.
Sept. Dick Capps announced the March 4 filing deadline for Whitewright School Board with two three year terms open. Filed so far are James England James W. Johnson and Bobby Durham. Forms available at the school. Helen Billner city secretary noted the same deadline for two two year Whitewright city council seats and the mayor position. The council seats arise from Bill Pearce and Leon Scott transfers. Scott seat filled by B W Burchfield. Pearce seat vacant since departure. At press time no filings for council or mayor.
Whitewright residents attended a Veterans of WWI Barracks gathering on Saturday with Mr. and Mrs. Tom Brown Mr. and Mrs. Dusty Rhodes Mrs. Fred Garner Sr and Mr. and Mrs. John Curtis. The auxiliary served soup and pie to about 35 members in the Assembly Room of the Grayson County courthouse. Jackie Jester has returned home from Sherman Hospital where she was a surgical patient and is reported doing fine. Charles Lewis of Kerwin and Robert Green of Mexia visited Whitewright over the weekend. Mr and Mrs Johan Curtis visited Mr and Mrs Clifford Brookens in Leonard on Sunday.
