Empty shelves in the week say a lot about looming rationing. Whitewright registration begins Friday for A through M and Saturday for N through Z at the Grammar School building. War Ration Book No. 1 required for each person. No. 2 issued only with No. 1.
Washington reports a slight reduction in the sugar ration. Stamp No 12 in Book No 1 becomes valid March 16 for five pounds, to last 11 weeks until the end of May, a small decrease from the basic ration of half a pound per person per week.
In Albany Capt Eddie Rickenbacker denounces the inner clique of labor unionism for seeking more dues and power and calls for unity in sacrifice. He opposes overtime pay for a 48 hour week and questions wage hour suspensions during wartime. Senator Dunnigan criticizes the anti labor tone of his address to the New York Legislature. He notes incentive plans boost production by about one third compared with wage hour act plants.
Mr and Mrs J R Wallace of Fannin County have been informed by the War Department that their son Pvt Ira D Wallace is a prisoner of the Japanese government in the Philippine Islands. This is their first notice since the fall of Corregidor on May 7. The couple also has two other sons in the service Charles G Wallace of Roswell New Mexico and Johnnie Wallace at Camp Barkley Texas. Manhattan Island was discovered by Henry Hudson on Sept 4 1609.
Arthur Badgett announces that Elmo Wallace and Henry Phillips will assist farmers at the office west of the city hall all next week to fill out farm plan sheets. Farmers should bring the mailed sheets to save time. A meeting will be held at the agricultural building on the High School campus Saturday at 8 p.m. to explain the 1943 farm program.

Treasury Secretary Morgenthau urged quick congressional action to raise the debt ceiling to 210 billion dollars as the second Victory Loan drive of 13 billion approaches. He warned stopping the drive mid way would halt needed ammunition and asked Congress to pass the increase despite an administration clash over Roosevelt’s salary cap repeal.
The Denison ration board announced that dried beans and peas may be sold for seed this week. Food sales resume March 1 with Stamps from Ration Book II. Each person has 48 points in March and grocers must record seed sales during the freeze.
Washington report states Secretary Claude Wickard lifted wheat production quotas under the Agricultural Adjustment Act to ensure adequate food and feed for the war effort. The order releases wheat for feed or market for the 1942-43 and 1943-44 marketing years and ties AAA payments and loans to meeting 90 percent of war crop goals.
President Roosevelt told reporters a second front of sorts was agreed with Churchill and opened in North Africa, noting he had not read Stalin’s anniversary order. He recalled Casablanca talks and said the move began at Algiers or Casablanca, while admitting no fixed definition of the second front.

Mrs. S J Janway receives a letter from her son William Janway F/2c in the Navy in the Pacific. Pvt Billy Bailey, 1779 Ordnance Co., McChord Field Tacoma, transfer news from Gunter Field Alabama. Numerous other service members including Pvt Glen Fleming, Pvt Roy Martin, Pvt Edgar Ayers, Pvt Robert Scott, Pvt J W Sanderson, Pvt Maurice Wright, Pfc William Edwin Badgett, Pfc James Garland, Pvt Archie Burden, Seaman 2/c Dewey Griffin, Billy Earl Montgomery, Mark Montgomery Jr, Sgt James Claborn, Navy men Jack Dick Simpson and George Simpson visit family, and Joe Ellyott Warren reports ship assignment.
Whitewright Methodists join a nationwide Week of Dedication from Feb 28 to Mar 7 urging 8 million members to pledge self and service. A March 7 culmination will include personal commitments and a sacrificial offering to aid wartime needs. Local services feature speakers from Sherman and Denison and are highlighted by Whitewright High School choir.
The War Department halted acceptance of applications from 3-A selective service registrants for volunteer officer candidate induction. Ongoing applications will finish, and current volunteers remain in service. The 15,000-strong officer candidate list represents about ten months of supply under present quotas. Deferrals for dependency allowed volunteering with potential return to civilian life if not commissioned.
Wichita County will vote March 13 on legalizing beer sales. The election was ordered by the commissioners court after a petition containing 1,500 signatures.
Allied Brit ish and American forces drove Rommel's tank columns toward retreat from Thala and through the Kasserine Pass in Tunisia. Air and ground power pounded retreating German units, with hundreds of prisoners taken and material captured as British Eighth Army presses toward Mareth defenses and Feriana.
Secretary of Agriculture Claude Wickard asked Congress for a clear mandate to proceed with the proposed food production program. He told the House Agriculture Committee that the government should continue crop loans and incentive payments and oppose a general rise in farm prices in bills before Congress.
Price Administration Tuesday announced permanent wholesale egg ceiling prices, predicting immediate consumer price relief but annual averages to be one to two cents higher per dozen than current levels.
