The PTA and Chamber of Commerce in Whitewright announce a special tree planting week from February 26 to March 2. Households are urged to pledge one or more trees per residence with emphasis on native species and support from schools and city property.
Seven half gallon jars of white corn whisky and several pint bottles with corn whisky colored by artificial coloring were seized when Sheriff Floyd Everheart and Deputies Bart Shipp and George Brinkley raided a farmer on Ida road southeast of Sherman early Monday. A man and a woman were arrested and charged with illegal possession of intoxicating liquor in warrants filed before Justice of the Peace H. D. Cumby. Bond set at $1,000 for the man and $500 for the woman.
The executive board and citizens outlined joint forestry and parentteacher projects with radio programs to unite town and country. Committees set dates for community entertainments, sprinkling costs, street dust-laying options, and a March athletic visit to neighboring schools. The PTA banquet to follow, tickets for all, and March farm boys judging exhibit are also coordinated.
Denison February 20 J Albert Montgomery was instantly killed and Basil O Gillam seriously injured when a Katy engine struck the truck they were driving near the railroad shops. The truck was demolished and Montgomery crushed to death as they exited the shops after work.
The family of Mrs. Janway thanks Whitewright residents for kindness during illness and after her death and for sympathetic words. Rub-My-Tism antiseptic hinted at in the notice.
University of Texas President Robert E. Vinson accepts presidency of Western Reserve University in Cleveland. He will resign at a regents meeting next Monday with no date set, but not later than July 1, 1923. potential Texas successors include H Y Benedict W B Bizzell and S P Brooks.
Governor Neff appointed nine members to the Texas Technological College board to be based in West Texas. Terms span two to six years with appointees from Beaumont Dallas Waco Fort Worth and El Paso. The first meeting is set for March 2 in Sweetwater plus a statewide celebration of the college act.
Sherman Steam Marble and Granite Works advertises as a large wholesale and retail monument maker in the state offering first class work at reasonable prices. It also features metal settees and fountain vases for cemetery lots and guarantees satisfaction.
Washington reports Republican leaders concede to obstructionists and pause the Administration Shipping Bill after Senator Sheppard of Texas delivers a ten hour forty five minute speech on the Senate floor. Supporters vow to resume with speeches through week’s end as other members prepare to join the debate. Senator Williams of Mississippi then takes the floor after the quorum call.
A hung jury resulted Sunday at Claude in the trial of Ridley Dean a Sherman man and former city attorney charged with assault to murder his father in law D A Harrell at Claude last year Dean and his witnesses including his mother and two judges returned to Sherman after jury discharge
Sherman report notes the South Grayson Red Cross recall and subscription drive for the public health service will begin Saturday March 10 and run through the following Wednesday. Rev Jap Manton, chairman, announced plans to cover the county's south half.
Whitewright residents will see a cream station setup to test and grade dairy products. J W Wilson hosts the equipment with Mr Ridgway of Mistletoe Creameries Fort Worth arriving Friday to demonstrate testing apparatus and present an illustrated lecture at 3 PM at the Odeon Theatre under the high school Agriculture class.
Mrs. Jessie Biggerstaff Williams dies at noonday after scarlet fever and influenza in Dallas area, leaving husband Henry Williams and three children. Survived by siblings Victor, Willa, Bess, Hugh, Ruth, Edith. funeral at home conducted by Elders Carter and Dickey of the Church of Christ. Burial in a rustic wooded setting.

The Whitewright District Inter scholastic League meet will be held here Saturday with about twenty three schools expected to participate. The program starts 8 45 a m at the grammar school auditorium and runs through 5 p m with declamation and debate finals at 7 30 p m. Friday features music memory contests at the grammar school auditorium.
A major blaze at Manhattan State Hospital on Ward's Island in the East River kills twenty five inmates in their cells and injures over a hundred others. Three nurses are missing and chaos erupts as frightened patients attack rescuers while firemen and attendants battle to save the trapped on the fourth floor. Police and hospital staff struggle to control the panic as the fire rips through the old building.
