Whitewright VFW Post 7111 became the first Texas post to exceed its 1954 membership quota, earning nine state and national honors. Deaths Mrs A J Cates 82 Funeral Held In Whitewright
Funeral services for Mrs. A J Cates 82 were held at 2 00 p m Wednesday at Earnheart Chapel with Rev Newton V Cole and Tildon McFerrin officiating. Burial was in City Cemetery. She died at 2 10 a m Tuesday after a long illness. Born February 4 1872 in Mississippi she married A J Cates in Whitewright on April 27 1910 and lived on a farm before moving to Whitewright. She was a Baptist Church member and survived by four stepsons and a sister plus several nieces and nephews.

Grayson County gins had 26 441 bales ginned for the 1953 crop before Jan 15 with more to gin and two Whitewright gins reported 4 481 bales by noon yesterday. Fannin County showed 53 833 bales ginned up to Jan 15 versus 32 054 last year. The report calls it the best cotton year in recent years despite reduced acreage.

Mr and Mrs J D Marlow lost nearly all their household goods Friday afternoon when a fire destroyed their farm home on the J P Everheart place northwest of Whitewright. They saved only some clothing after he checked under the house and a later discovery of the blaze. Insurance coverage was $800, not enough to replace kitchen furniture and appliances.

Leonard Publisher Buried Tuesday
H. H. Hammond aged 38, publisher of the Leonard Graphic for seven years, died Sunday night in a Dallas hospital after a two week brain tumor illness. Funeral services were held in Leonard Tuesday afternoon. Survived by wife, daughter Sherry Kay 16, mother Mrs. Bessie Hammond of Moran, brother H. E. Hammond of Fort Worth, and sister Mrs. Hugh Merton of San Francisco. The Hammonds also published Celeste Courier starting Jan 1 from the Leonard plant.
