Whitewright residents weather snows that halted school and sparked snowball play. Local leaders journeyed to a fish fry while misrouting nearly stranded them, and a Van Alstyne pair refused to blaze a trail. Grayson County residents face an April 15 deadline to have autos inspected. 36,208 registered vehicles with 21 percent already inspected, warning of weather delays and reduced inspection days. Washington reports about 1,420,000 boys turning 18 in 1961 will register for the draft but will not be drafted for at least four years if at all. The present average induction age is 23, with local boards varying by a few months.
Raymond Edward Inman 41 died February 1 after a three month illness in a Dallas hospital. Funeral and burial were in Dallas. Born June 2 1919 in Whitewright he was the son of the late Luther W Inman. He worked for Hardwicke Ett er Co Sherman and was a World War II veteran and Methodist. Surviving are his mother three daughters a grandson one brother and several nieces and nephews.
Russell Davis of Tom Bean died after a long illness in a Dallas hospital. Funeral services were held in Sherman with burial at Holloway Cemetery. He was born September 30, 1893, in Tom Bean. Survived by four sisters Emma Hill Cleo Jones Viva Phillips and others and a brother Hebron Davis. He was a member of the Church of Christ.
The Whitewright Chamber of Commerce meeting at Firemen’s Hall drew good attendance with talk of flood retention dams on Pilot Grove and Sister Grove creeks. Landowners and Grayson County officials blocked a contract. the SCS proposed condemnation and upkeep powers, but no action was taken.
Pfc Marvin D Jenkins son of Mr and Mrs J W Jenkins Whitewright Texas is set to take part in Exercise Freeze a six week cold weather warfare drill in Alaska from February 9 to 18. The paratroopers from Fort Bragg will clash with Alaska units in a 1900 square mile arctic area. Jenkins with Company C 23d Infantry at Fort Richardson arrived in Alaska last August and joined the Army in March 1960. Mrs Irene Hendricks of Dallas visited J H Lumpkins over the weekend.
