A North Texas winter storm dumped at least six inches of snow on Whitewright and surrounding areas. Motorists faced slick bridges and a major 10 mile stackup on US 75 from the Oklahoma line to Denison. Dozens of vehicles stalled and emergency crews worked to clear the jam for hours.

Whitewright City Council OKs water sewer rate hikes and land sale
In a special session Mayor Dick Walker and most council members approved raising water rates from 4 to 5 dollars and sewer fees from 1.75 to 3.15, effective March 1. They also authorized a 50 thousand dollar loan for architectural and engineering fees for a new city hall, repayable at 500 dollars per month for 10 years. The council agreed to sell Dr. Paul Geers a 50 by 400 foot land strip for 1 thousand dollars and discussed NETLA library joining with a 5 thousand dollar operating budget target, plus annual library funding of 2.5 thousand dollars. Street repairs and an upcoming April election were also noted.

Tigers Clinch District 16 A Title With OT Victory
Whitewright Tigers secured the district crown by defeating Honey Grove 74-67 in overtime after a 63-63 regulation. Steve Hodge led scoring with 25, Gary Tillett 22, Walter Daniel 19. Whitewright also beat Bells 81-62 and closes the season 23-1, ranked 10th in Texas Class A. Coppell finished 8th. Coppell were last year’s state champions. Coach Mark Kline said Leonard game Friday and Bi-District vs Coppell awaits.
