Washington reports the War Department endorsed a five year plan to add 1,000 planes and create a 900 machine emergency flying squadron named the G H Q air force. The proposal also calls for 400 regular officers and 6,200 enlisted men to bolster the air corps.
About 500 ex-service men from Grayson County gathered at the Loving auditorium in Old Settlers park for a goat barbecue and informal program hosted by the Charles R. Simmons post American Legion. L. L. Loy chaired arrangements while Bob Sears acted as toastmaster. Jerome McKinney of Denison spoke on the Legion four point program as posts reported membership and activities. Denison soprano Evelyn Powers sang two numbers.
Anther Hudgins Jr a 15 year old Whitewright high school sophomore was found in Wichita Kansas after disappearing January 24. He traveled by box car toward the south northward and stayed in a drug store for warmth before police took him to the station. His Kansas relatives in Arkansas City later took him in.
Memphis meeting of the Association of Agricultural Workers reports broad approval of AAA policies and federal bonuses for acreage reduction. Leaders from states, universities, and federal agencies say the agricultural downturn is ending, though some warn against narrowing farming to export losses.
Mrs. A. L. Jackson in charge says Zane Gray is the most popular author and the library needs more titles. The Whitewright library holds 209 books with 165 issued by Jan. 30 and serves Whitewright and nearby communities. Donations from local residents and the Sherman Public Library have expanded holdings and several newspapers are available.
Whitewright fans will see the high school team play Trenton and the Wildcats face the Austin College freshmen in a Saturday night double header after Friday wins in Van Alstyne. Dixon brothers led scoring. the high school edged Van Alstyne 28 24 while the Wildcats won 39 21 on the road and 33 18 at home. Referee controversy over free throws influenced the game as Van Alstyne was gifted 23 attempts, missing 14.
The suspension bridge over the Red River at Lowell's Bluff north of Bonham collapsed Monday night after a cable broke on the Texas side. Built by Austin Brothers, the nearly 1000 foot toll bridge later became part of the Bonham to Durant highway under Texas and Oklahoma control.
A federal petition filed in Nevada Missouri seeks a receivership for Farm and Home Savings and Loan Association. R B Hackler and Betty Hackler of Rincon New Mexico charge officers and directors with negligence and seek suspension removal and an accounting of funds and property lost by the association.
President Roosevelt signed a bill guaranteeing the principal of farm credit bonds and creating a corporation to aid in refinancing farm debts. The report notes unrelated trivia about guinea pigs multiplying rapidly.
The Texas Senate rejected the House bill to extend the automobile registration payment deadline to March 31. The measure failed 9 to 12 after an 11 to 10 vote in favor, with Senator Grady Woodruff moving to reconsider and George Purl steering the fate by voting to kill it.
City officials led by City Manager Morgan Works and Sheriff Benton Davis met at city hall to pursue removal of nickel and penny slots from Sherman. City Recorder J. D. Buster drafted a brief arguing slot machines are illegal and a felony to operate, citing Article 619 of the 1925 statutes. District Attorney Hubert Bookout later warned operators to cease by Thursday or face prosecution and seizure.
The Senate Appropriations subcommittee on independent offices voted five to four against adding any new veterans benefits to the measure. Senator Byrnes of South Carolina led the majority, saying the American Legion four point program and similar veteran proposals were amendments not in order on an appropriation bill.

The State Highway Department called for bids on 6.8 miles of grading and drainage for Highway 160 from 5.6 miles northwest of Bells to Denison. Proponents from Denison Bells and Whitewright expect traffic to divert from the Denison Sherman Dallas route once the highway opens.
Checks totaling 37412.20 are held by County Agent B F Gray for cotton farmers who retained options and agreed to cooperate in the 1934 35 reduction program. Cashing out options yields 20 per bale with no further interest. retained options may pay the final settlement above 10 cents per pound plus about 7 50 per bale profit.
Gen Hugh S Johnson employed Sol A Rosenblatt to study movie star salaries. Greta Garbo $7000 weekly for She Tank She Go Home, Eddie Cantor $260000 for The Kid from Spain, Chevalier $300000 per year, Will Rogers $125000 per picture, John Barrymore $75000 per picture, Mae West $200000 for next film, John Gilbert $500000 for two pictures, Gloria Swanson and Richard Barthelmess $500000 for two pictures, Mary Pickford Fairbanks Chaplin Lloyd and others own film interests. Preachers salaries show over 51 percent earn less than $1000 per year. distribution ranges from under $500 to above $4000, with over 20000 preachers seeking work. Texas Baptist Voice.
The Federal Surplus Relief Corporation ordered 28 435 hogs daily for twenty days. Contracts were awarded to about twenty packing firms nationwide to pur chase and cure Wiltshire sides. Meat will be distributed to needy unemployed.
The Sun lists J. L. Cantrell as a candidate for justice of the peace in precinct three. His formal announcement will appear in a later issue.
Secretary Wallace extended the signup deadline to February 15 for cotton production control contracts amid delays in supplies and county efforts. The minimum lint yield was cut from 100 to 75 pounds per acre to include farmers not reaching the former limit. Dallas and Texas observers expect the 6,420,000 acre Texas quota to be reached with added signups and a lower yield threshold.
About 95 percent of district cotton farmers had signed contracts to reduce 1934 35 acreage by Wednesday night according to J W Henry of the local cotton control committee. The committee expected around 100 signers, with 95 having signed so far.
Up to January 16 there were 50,356 bales ginned in Grayson County. By the same date last year 42,548 bales had been produced. After plowing under nearly a third of the 1933 crop, the county produced about 8,000 more bales than in 1934.
Ellis Blackshear of Trenton admitted stealing groceries to feed his hungry family. The district court jury granted a two year suspended sentence and raised about $3.50 for the defendant, who thanked the jury with his mother present as tears were shed.
