Franklin Smith Dies at 85 in Texas Community
Franklin Smith, 85, died last Thursday morning at his son Walsh Smith’s home four miles east of town after weeks of illness. Funeral services were held Friday by Rev Kerr of Ector with burial at Oak Hill Cemetery. Smith arrived in Texas forty one years ago from Tennessee and settled in the area.

Two Killed in Wreck North of Bells Friday
Two men died when the Katy Texas Special derailed north of Bells at 7 30 last Friday night. Engineer James C. Blair died instantly trapped under his engine. J J Tryling was fatally injured in the baggage car after reportedly jumping as the coach overturned. Nine others were injured, none seriously. The Texas Special wreck involved multiple cars with several derailed or overturned. a relief train with doctors was organized from Denison. Blair, a long serving Katy engineer since 1876, resided in Denison and left a widow.

Fire destroys Sherman barn. one man dead
A midnight blaze at 116 122 West Pecan in Sherman, owned by Judge Silas Hare and used by Sherman Transfer and Livery, killed Fritz Landers, 32, and badly burned Lon Langham. The fire destroyed horses and about 100 sewing machines, with losses estimated at 40 50 thousand dollars. Firemen rescued Langham, who was in critical condition, after heroic efforts amid intense heat and frozen water plugs. The blaze produced heavy damage and prompted investigations into the worker displaced by the Katy telegraph department.
