Whitewright Wins $493,800 City Hall and Civic Center Grant

Whitewright Mayor Dick Walker announced a $493,800 federal grant from the Economic Development Administration for a new city hall and civic center. The project includes offices, police, fire, library, auditorium, kitchen, meeting rooms and parking. City shares about $75,000 for architectural fees and furnishings.

Rites Held For Miss Mary Jeanette Jones in Dallas

Services conducted December 23 at Earnheart Chapel for Mary Jeanette Jones 42 of Dallas who died December 21 1976. Burial in Oak Hill Cemetery. A Whitewright native she lived in Dallas 24 years and worked as executive assistant at Lykes Bros Steamship Co. Inc. Born August 20 1934 she was active with Philological Society Dallas Symphony Civic Opera Metropolitan Opera Channel 13 YMCA and Highland Baptist Church. She survived by parents a brother Ben and sister Mrs David Price all of Whitewright.

School Board Suspends Student for Drugs

Whitewright School board discussed discipline policy at its meeting. A high school student was suspended 20 days for marijuana possession on campus. The board nominated nine citizens to a federal court ordered bi racial committee to improve school community communication. The 1977 tax rate was approved with no change. Next meeting moved to January 21.

Whitewright Unbeaten In District 16-A Play

Whitewright Tigers remain undefeated in District 16-A after a 76-52 win over Fannindel, leading 23-8 and 42-20 at halftime. Steve Hodge scored 24, Walter Daniels 16, Don Carson 10 for Fannindel. In girls action, Debbie Franklin 23 led Whitewright while Deborah Adams had 24 for Fannindel.

Services were held Monday at Earnheart Chapel for Eva E Coulombe 69 of Tom Bean who died Friday December 24 1976 in a Sherman hospital Burial was in Swisher Cemetery at Lake Dallas She was born January 2 1907 in Tom Bean She married Ray Coulombe in 1943 at Indianapolis Indiana She was a member of the Tom Bean Church of Christ She retired four years ago from the Continental Bus station Survivors include four sisters Mae Langford Tom Bean Annie McDonald Norman Oklahoma Sally Moore Houston and Flora B Langford Dallas

Mrs. Cowart Services Held in Whitewright

Funeral services were held Thursday for Mrs. T. L. Cowart 83 who died December 21 1976 in a Sherman hospital. Burial followed at Pilot Grove Cemetery. Born October 14 1893 in Van Alstyne she married T. L. Cowart November 28 1916 in Tom Bean and was a member of Whitewright First Baptist Church. Survivors include brother G. B. Doggett Duncanville and sister Mrs. Ethel Stedham Whitewright.

Christmas Drawings Draw Large Downtown Crowds

The final Christmas drawing in downtown White Wright drew a large crowd on Saturday as part of Dec. events sponsored by the Chamber of Commerce. President Charles Truksa said $906.76 was given away. Winners listed include Ora Murphy Hazel Murphy Ida Burchfield Dorothy Hansley Liz Henderson and many others.

East Texas State University Graduates Over 600 in Ceremony

More than six hundred students graduated December 17 at East Texas State University in full commencement. ETSU President F H Mc Dowell presided with Board of Regents Chairman Jack Coker and Dr Barry Thompson among those awarding degrees. Whitewright graduates included Phyllis Earnheart and Kathy Ann Jarvis Lewis. A Saturday drawing noted missing names and urged winners to call for print inclusion. Merchants contributing to drawings included many local businesses.

Ivory Jewelry Importer Speaks at Whitewright Rotary Meeting

Ed Tripp an ivory carvings and jewelry importer spoke at the Whitewright Rotary noon meeting on Tuesday. He described overseas trips, mostly to the Far East, and showcased ivory and porcelain novelties. Ro tarian James W. Donaghey introduced him as the club plans to resume Friday noon meetings next week. Holidays drew a large list of local visitors to Christmas Eve gatherings.
