A total of 2 962 bales of cotton had been ginned by three Whitewright gins by Saturday night with more likely to come in. Despite leaf worms the area produced several hundred more bales than last year and farm conditions show improvement with better prices for dairy farmers and ample forage and hay for sale.
The Sun lists Christmas greetings from local firms and individuals across pages 2 through 8. Names include First National Bank Harold Doss Katy Railroad Luther Gordon T W Ayres & Son and more.
The president demands two trees in the White House for Christmas. One modern white and silver tree in the East room will be electric and fire proofed. Upstairs a second tree, lit by old fashioned candles, will glow with colored ornaments.
Census bureau reports this year as of December 13 total cotton ginned 9,757,680 running bales, with 238,547 round and 13,557 American Egyptian. State totals include Texas 2,570,898 and Arkansas 782,457, among others, while last year at the same date counted 9,173,295. An ad copy urges making money at home, with cautions.
State pension funds will be matched dollar for dollar by the federal government, announced by State Auditor Orville S. Carpenter after meetings in Washington with the social security board. He noted previous misconstructions of a 50 cent federal share and expects Texas approval to form by February 4 with the board’s signoff needed for effect.
Santa Claus paid Whitewright a Saturday visit greeted by a large crowd. Weather was poor with sleet snow and rain as he arrived on time. Hundreds of children gathered while Santa handed out candy and promised to visit good children on Christmas Eve. Nine cash gifts were distributed by merchants.
The fifth tabulation reports 819,320 votes from 34 states with 346,622 in favor and 472,698 opposing, yielding 57.69 percent against the New Deal. Southern and Western states drive opposition, while eleven states back Roosevelt and fourteen report no count yet.
Congress in 1935 approved a record peacetime appropriation of $940,662,549 for the army and Navy. Major authorizations include $88,310,000 for navy expansion, $26,715,660 for naval aircraft, $21,000,000 for armament, and increases in enlistment to 165,000 in the army and 93,000 in the Navy.
Sherman native Mrs. Mary Lucas Butridge, 77, died Sunday at home. Funeral services were held Monday afternoon. Survived by husband GC S. Butridge, daughter Mrs. F I Grigg of Sherman, sons J H Butridge of Chicago and W N Butridge of Sherman, nine grandchildren and one great grandchild.
Washington report onDr F E Townsend facing liberal fire over the 200 a month old age pension plan and a 2 percent transaction tax aimed at funding a pension fund. Townsend plans to seek economists to draft a new tax while political leaders call the movement a nightmare and discuss its impact on future elections.

Sam Houston was named Texas's most outstanding figure in a statewide poll by Texas State College for Women. Stephen F. Austin ranked second and David Crockett third. Four hundred fifty-two high schools participated, selecting Austin for the Texas Hall of Fame along with other historic figures. Portraits and busts are planned for the college library.
Sherman resident William H. Cooney 85 died Sunday at his home after fifty three years in Sherman. Born in Ohio he came to Grayson County sixty years ago settling on a farm near Luella. Survived by two sons Ira J. Cooney Sherman and Frank W. Cooney Dallas and one grandson. Funeral services were held Monday.
Dr. Edgar V. Allen of the Mayo Clinic cites 300000 cases to claim women outlive men and suffer fewer serious diseases. He notes higher male infant mortality, earlier death, and more illnesses while suggesting heredity lowers male vitality.
B F Gafford appointed Friday by Governor James V Allred as criminal district attorney of Grayson County to fill the unexpired term of Hubert Bookout who resigned effective Jan 1 1936 Gafford is a former county attorney and longtime Democratic executive commit tee chairman. Bookout resigned after injuries from an Oct 1 wreck and will be replaced amid questions of appointing authority.
A Monday trades day in Whitewright attracted an unusually large crowd with more stock on the trade lot than in months. Mules and horses fetched better prices and demand rose, traders report. The Fourth Monday event is growing in favor and may attract more attention with a little effort.
Denison Texas highway notes report federal approval needed for a $30,271 low bid by Uvalde Construction Co. of Dallas to build the Bells underpass on Highway 160. The project is part of $1,242,553 in sixteen county highway launches awaiting clearance and will complete the Denison to Bells link toward Highway 5 and the Whitworth road. Grading and drainage near Denison to Iron Ore Creek bridge are nearing completion.
At the Grammar School building the Parent-Teacher Association voted to provide a sweater for the Whitewright High School football team. Businessmen and others funded and ordered the sweaters, which will bear a large W and be presented after the new year. Dr B Wrenn Webb J H Burma Jr and the High School Glee Club participated in the program.
Italian forces report a diverse haul from front lines including Mauser rifles, World War I cartridges marked United States Cartridges, modern machine guns, anti aircraft guns, and blunt, barbed spears used by Ethiopian irregulars. Barbed spears and curved swords feature among weapons, with rhinoceros-hide shields offering limited protection against bullets.
The War Department issued an order effective Jan 1 prohibiting army officers from coaching in civilian colleges. It leaves current contracts in place for Capt. Lawrence M. Jones at Oklahoma University and Maj. Ralph Sasse at Mississippi State College, but they cannot continue coaching after these contracts end.
