Neighborhood homes glow with holiday lights and a large star brightens the Main and Bond intersection. Postmaster T. J. Lilley notes a Christmas card surge and schools plan seasonal parties as public classes pause for holidays until January 2.
Central Christian Church staged two performances of The Gift Magnificent a Christmas song and story service with proceeds totaling 75 dollars for Juliet Fowler orphans. The pageant featured Mrs Gomer Graves as director reader and Mary, and included many church and city participants. The Methodist Church held a Christmas program that evening with candlelit decor and readers, plus morning and evening offerings for the Methodist Orphans Home at Waco totaling about 125 dollars plus further contributions planned.
Teresa Nallini, a 20 year old chamber maid, dropped her purse when it slid from her grasp to the sidewalk. Paulo Fumagelli, a passing lottery bettor, helped pick up the coins and advised adding their ages to the total to buy a ticket. The number won 3369 dollars and Monday she announced her engagement to Paulo.
A Monday check shows 830 conditional pardons and 453 reprieves granted by Governor Allred from January 1 to November 30, following recommendations by the Board of Pardons and Paroles. Fifty clemency revocations were ordered for new convictions or improper conduct.
Grayson County farmers will vote on December 28 to elect three community committeemen and two alternates from each of eleven districts for the 1939 agricultural conservation program. A delegate and an alternate from each district will meet December 29 in Sherman to form a county committee. Voting sites: Whitewright and Bells at Bells, Tom Bean, Pilot Grove and Ida at Tom Bean. Eligible voters are farm operators and owners.
Sun Bargain Days will end Dec 24 and after that date no subscriptions will be accepted at the reduced rate of 1.50. Texas residents may renew for 1.00 before the deadline. Publisher urges those who have not paid to do so today, tomorrow, or Saturday. List of new subscribers follows with names such as W. T. Simmons and Mrs. Frank Miller among many others.
A. F. Jack Nossaman of Whitewright and Roy G. Baker of Sherman have formed a law partnership, opening offices at 303 304 Commercial Building in Sherman under the name Nossaman & Baker. Nossaman moves his Whitewright office to Sherman while continuing residence there, and Baker, formerly an assistant district attorney, was elected dolorial representative in district 45. Nossaman will remain commissioner referee under section 75-S of the United States bankruptcy act, serving Grayson, Fannin, Collin and Cooke Counties.
SHERMAN December 31 has been set as the deadline for making applications for payments from the government of 1 a bale on 1933 plow up cotton, according to an announcement from the county agent's office. Farmers are requested to bring in forms C-5-1 or make affidavit if lost and enclose in the application. The announcement says these forms should not be confused with the Bankhead certificates issued that farmers might sell cotton free of tax in 1934-35.
Sixteen Whitewright Tiger gridsters will receive letters this year in black jackets with gold sleeves instead of sweaters. The list includes Charles Harrison Rudolph Phillips Stanley Sells Buck Howard and others as coach S T Montgomery notes the team had a tough season with many freshmen and three years of eligibility remaining.
Camp Fire Girls in Sherman attend candle lighting at Central Christian Church with guardian Mrs. Joe Johnson and Mrs. J C English. Tests conducted. girls earning Trail Seeker and Wood Gatherer ranks include Gaye Nell English, Anna Ruth Johnson, Pattie Everheart, Ann La Roe, Bessie Joe Russell, Clyde Russell, Betty Jane Harper, and Dorothy Sue Douglas.
Whitewright High takes on a rebuilding basketball season with 16 inexperienced players under Coach S T Montgomery after Superintendent H W Key previously led the team. They prepared for a conference opener against Whitesboro that was postponed to late February and have two prior games, a 27 16 win over Trenton and a 9 7 loss to Blue Ridge. The squad includes Charles Harrison and 15 others: Billy Ray Conner David Taylor Leslie Andrews Howard Wallace Stanley Sells John Robert Bow Bert Russell Co B Burchfield Clifton Burchfield J J Sloan D W Garland Lloyd Cato Wilton McFarland Earl Mercer and R A Scott.
The Onion Bowl 14-B vs 17-B game moves to Friday at 2 30 p m at Garland Athletic Field to avoid clashing with the state A championship in Dallas. 17 B includes Floyd Everheart and Billy Pritchett from Whitewright plus players from Royse City Rockwall Bells Van Alstyne Whitesboro Farmersville and Plano. 14 B draws players from Masquito Irving Carrollton Garland Buckner Lancaster Grand Prairie Richardson Wilmer Hutchins Vickery Duncanville Seagoville and Cedar Hill. Originated in 1937 the Union Bowl game drew quick support from grid fans.
Peter Hazard, a Scotsman, was seen giving away pound notes in the street and told by a Scottish magistrate in Newcastle to be more careful and uphold the dignity of the Scots. He was charged with drunkenness and fined five dollars.
Palace Theatre presents a holiday lineup including Suez Down the Stretch Room Service The Arkansas Traveler and others. Week schedule changes feature separate Saturday night prevue and Monday displays with a full program shown in the Palace ad on page 5.
The White House said President Roosevelt will send a special message to Congress in January proposing extending the Social Security Act coverage and strengthening its provisions. Presidential Secretary Stephen T. Early stated the message focuses on broadening protection under the act.
Ground breaking ceremonies for a $72,000 Whitesboro school plant were held at 10 30 a m Tuesday. WPA director Gus W Thomasson and Dallas architect Hoke Smith spoke. The present top story will be removed and the building reconditioned and linked by an enclosed passage to a new two story unit with 20 rooms.
Underprivileged are to receive Christmas cheer from local clubs schools and individuals. City hall facilities are used for assembling and distributing as before. Donations are smaller and only 50 packages will be distributed mainly to families not employed on community public work projects.
Lynn Landrum noted columnist born in Whitewright returned for a Rotary Club luncheon as guest speaker. He recalled his hometown fires, read readers letters, praised free expression, and paid tribute to Miss Sue Stephens. Attendees included Mrs Landrum and several local figures as the club shifted meeting day for Christmas.
Fort Worth reports two Roosevelt grandchildren Ruth Chandler four and Elliott junior two receive wrapped White House gifts with warnings not to open until Christmas. They will speak by long distance with Grandpa and Grandma at eight o clock Christmas morning.
A Christmas pageant directed by Jim Jernigan will be performed this evening at 7 30 in the high school auditorium. The program features carols and scenes with the high school chorus and a long list of student performers including Lydia Mae Arney Dorothy Auten and many others along with Brazwell Alexander and C B Bryant III in key roles.
Whitewright High School and Grammar School staff plan holidays with many staying local. Superintendent H W Key, Mrs Jack Lackey, S T Montgomery and Principal Jim Jernigan remain in town, while others visit relatives in Sherman Dallas Fort Worth and nearby cities.
