This week remains busy with political events and Christmas greetings as the Chamber of Commerce notes tonight’s regular meeting at 7 30 at the Malt Shop. Voters face a Saturday runoff to choose two of six candidates for the January congressional seat, with Charles Skaggs as election judge.
The paper received an unsigned poem printed to pass the time. The editors note they do not publish home-grown poetry, even their own, and joke about a general poetic urge in people at various life stages.
Floyd W. Harvey promoted to sergeant on December 4 at Kaneohe Bay Marine Corps Air Station Hawaii. He is assigned to the communications department of Headquarters Company Fourth Marine Regiment, First Marine Brigade of the Pacific Fleet Marine Force. Harvey entered service in June 1955.
Grayson County reports 835 railroad employees contribute about 5.01 million dollars annually to area economy. Based on a U S Labor Department consumer expenditure survey the average railroad worker spends on taxes food housing transportation and more. Railroads paid 120 444 in taxes in 1959 for schools counties and roads.

Washington reports that a deal between the administration and Sen. Olin D. Johnston clears the last congressional hurdle to postal rate increases. The plan would raise first class letters from four to five cents and air mail from seven to eight cents while transferring non postal service charges to the Treasury and deducting about 250 million from the Post Office deficit.
Miss Willie Pearl Edwards died last week in San Francisco California and was buried in Whittier California. She taught in Whitewright schools in 1918 and then joined the Internal Revenue Department in Washington D C before transferring to San Francisco. She retired six years ago and is survived by four sisters Mrs Josephine Smith Howe Mrs Sue Garrison Bonham Mrs Winnie Norman Whittier and Mrs Lola Nowlin Bakersfield.
Mrs. Lloyd Moore of Denison, formerly of Whitewright, died on Wednesday of last week. Funeral services were held in Denison Friday and she is buried at Oak Hill Cemetery. She was the widow of Lloyd Moore, a Whitewright businessman who died in 1957. Survivors include a son David Moore of Denison, a brother, two sisters, and two grandchildren.
Glendon F. Cox 109 Paschal street San Antonio died in a hospital December 11 a retired U S Air Force sergeant. Funeral with full military honors was held at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery last Thursday. He grew up in Whitewright and moved away in early manhood. Survivors include his wife of San Antonio two sons Russell Cox Mesquite and Gerald Ray Cox in Germany three brothers Claude Cox Denton Mitchell Cox Dallas and Hubert Cox Fredericksburg three sisters Mrs George Brannon Garland Mrs Hugh Pruitt Denton and Bertha Cox Denton and six grandchildren.
In Wichita Falls a special U.S. House runoff pits Joe Meissner a conservative Republican against a New Frontier Democrat. Both view the race in about a month as a severe test of party strength in Texas with Meissner declaring the line clearly drawn between his conservative platform and the opponent’s support for the Administration.
Detroit reports auto makers increase use of aluminum zinc and plastics while steel content falls about 3 percent from prior designs. The shift reflects emphasis on lighter weight components and improved efficiency in latest models.

705 absentee ballots cast in Saturdays election for the 4th Congressional district indicate a light turnout. Internal Revenue Commissioner Caplin announced a timetable to install a national network of electronic tax checking by 1966. The system will link nine regional sub centers to a Martinsburg West Virginia master computer and begin with Southeastern business returns in 1962. Taxpayers will send paper returns to 62 IRS offices and data will flow via punch cards and magnetic tapes to Martinsburg for comparison with a master file of about 78 million accounts stored on 40 miles of tape. Output tapes will guide letters to taxpayers.
Matson Navigation Co. reports the U S Post Office asked it to deliver a Chicago mailed letter to the Fiji Island describing an English woman missionary living on the second floor near the post office in Suva. The note mentions a smiling happy soul who waved goodbye to a Winston Churchill lookalike two years ago aboard a U S steamer.

Look magazine reports Robert Kennedy urged Lyndon B Johnson three times to drop out as JFK's running mate in 1960. Kennedy proposed Johnson become national chairman. Johnson reportedly muttered double cross while Lady Bird cried and Rayburn fretted as the plan shifted to a TV press conference.
