The first hard freeze of the season dropped to 18 degrees early Tuesday and again Wednesday in Whitewright. Frozen pipes, car radiators, and weak batteries challenged residents as forecasts failed to predict the sudden cold snap. Vegetation had already faced frost, though no major ice storm occurred despite a light mist and two days of wet weather.
The Woman's Society of Christian Service met at the Methodist Church for its annual Christmas luncheon with twenty members and guests. Miss Gladys Ray spoke on the Christmas story with prose and music, using Dorothy Summerall's Come to the Manger.
The Enterprise Baptist Church will hold its annual Christmas program Sunday December 17 at 7 00 p m. The program includes an announcer beginner class primary class scripture reading Luke 2 solo O Holy Night play O Little Town of Bethlehem with named cast, and a Christmas tree with gift exchange after benediction by Rev Charles Horton.

Mr and Mrs L A Bradley near Leonard celebrate fifty years of marriage with an open house on Sunday from 2 to 5 pm hosted by their children Mrs Mack Pierson of Celeste and Lon Ready Bradley of Denison. Their story recalls a first cake joke and a rich yellow cake anecdote.
The Post Office Department announced Jan 10 policy updates affecting second third and fourth class mail. No forwarding notification will be sent at no cost and forwarding postage pledges are no longer allowed. Undeliverable third and fourth class mail deemed of no value will be destroyed if return is not requested. Returns will show new address or non-delivery reason with a minimum 8 cent fee. Notification fee for undeliverable second class matter rises to 10 cents and returned second class with return requested incurs at least 10 cents.
Funeral services were held for Robert Ed ward Deaton Sr., 68, World War I veteran, retired farmer and former deputy sheriff, in Trenton. Burial followed in Burns Cemetery. A Benton Arkansas native, he lived in Orangeville before moving to Trenton. Survived by wife, six children, two half-siblings, eight grandchildren.

Upland cotton farmers in Grayson Collin and Fannin Counties backed marketing quotas and price supports for another season. O L Pig Jones of Whitewright was installed in Waco as District Deputy Grand Master of the Fourth Masonic District serving 13 Grayson County lodges. He succeeds Ford Savage of Sherman and has 21 years as deputy in the Grayson County Clerk's office. He is married with three children and four grandchildren.

At the American Farm Bureau Federation convention in Chicago the resolutions committee tentatively backed a platform denouncing price support and farm control measures urged by the Kennedy administration. Farm Bureau leaders and rank and file pressed for greater farm freedom from federal intervention while speakers toward the end of the hearing largely opposed federal welfare programs. An earlier session saw President Charles B. Shuman denounce such measures to the crowd. The annual Christmas lighting contest will award five prizes with sponsors including the Friday Literary Club the Chamber of Commerce Rotary Club Beta Sigma Phi and Community Public Service. First prize is a floor lamp for homes and prizes for business decorations plus cash awards of 750 five and two 50 with honorable mention. Judging by out of town judges occurs during December 17 23.

Washington reports that all Army reservists called to active duty during the Berlin crisis are expected to return to civilian life by June 30 next year. The Army plans to begin releasing about 119,500 National Guard and organized reserve members early in 1962 as draftees fill slots, including Texas' 49th Division called Oct. 15.
